Default Thinking about making Plexi glass or acrylic 1911 grips......

Has anyone seen this done before?

I was playing with the idea for several of my guns, now that I have a 1911 with grips that need to be replaced this is looking better and better.

A quick search found a company that sells acrylic grips for paintball guns, $40 a pair and they only make them in neon colors.

I was thinking that a set of clear grips on a 1911 would look amazing. Not only would you be able to watch round count but see the internal structure of the frame would just be downright nifty. Possibly leaving one side clear to watch round count and the other grip being smoked by lightly sanding the inside surface.

Before I waste 3 hours making a set I was wondering if they were already on the market.

    Thoughts?

That would be awesome if you made clear grips and a clear magazine, then you could really see the round count.

This has at least been somewhat done before. I remember in highschool we had to read Romeo & Juliet, and the teacher decided that we should watch the new movie that came out "Romeo & Juliet", the one with Claire Danes and Leo Dicaprio. Anyway, what caught my attention about the whole movie was their firearms because they were all "Swords" or "Daggers", etc. I noticed that someone had a gun that had the grips removed, and a clear magazine, or something was done to it. Here's a still that I found from the movie.

Most paintball gun "45" grips will fit a 1911. Some may not have the cutout for a mag release, some may not need it, depends on the shape.

This was done by both sides during WW2. I saw a picture of a German p08 with plexiglass grips made from the canopy of an aircraft. Also, a friend of mine collects 1911s and he has one he bought from the son of a deceased WW2 Vet, with plexi grips and a picture of his girlfriend/wife/kid's mother under the left side grip panel.

    Clear grips sound pretty cool.

Open magazines on the other hand are asking for trouble. I know some early machine guns had open magazines and dirt would get in them and jam the guns up.

I have a set of clear grips for 1911's these were fairly common in the 50's as people would put pin up girls pics in the grips.

Its decided. Ill be doing it this weekend. Especially since I have pin up pics of my gf to use.

In the meantime, I was talking to a buddy at work today when a girl next to us chimed in. Shes an art major and has to do metal engraving. She was begging to get her hands on my slide. We'll see about that.

But I told her what I was looking to do and she exploded with ideas. Clear acrylic and then she can inlay gold leaf into the back of it into a vine pattern or something. Anyway, Im meeting with her tomorrow and talking about it.
