scouting report
Decided to bag my nightly run on the road in SGL 183 and head back to the area I have tentatively decided to hunt on opening day. On the service road heading up the mountain I spotted a deer. It was at this point I remembered I had taken my binoculars out of my day pack for the Phillies game last week. Grrr. Now I'm wearing bifocals so it's a given my eye sight is not great. At first I assumed it was a lone doe, then I studied it some more and wasn't so sure. it was feeding away from me so I slowly approached. After going about 10 yards I decided it was a buck but not legal. I decided to see how close I could get. I kept going and as I approached I realized it was in fact a small 6 point. I ended up about 30 yards from him before he finally noticed the green stump on the road that he hadnt noticed before. Naturally his head whipped around as I was in mid-step and I had to freeze in that position. We had a stare down for about a minute until he decided enough was enough, let loose with multiple snorts and bolted. So........there's at least one buck in my chosen area. He wasn't a "trophy" but I'd shoot him in a heartbeat in season.

Good luck this year. The freezer doesn't know how big the antlers are.
