Just learned a new gun law. ATF regulation ???

A long gun does not meet the definition of a firearm, unless the barrel length is too short (and then its an SBR subject to NFA rules) or as noted above is a pistol grip (only, no buttstock) firearm.

The term “firearm” is defined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, 18 U.S.C. Section 921(a)(3), to include "(A) any weapon (including a starter gun), which will, or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; (B) the frame or receiver of any such weapon…."

The barrel length of a firearm shall be determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is applicable

I hope this isn't considered too much of a hijack but if you purchase something like the Mossberg Cuiser or Pursuader (pistol grip only shotgun) can you add a stock to it without turning it into an AOW? I assume it's legal to do so as long as the barrel is still the 18.5" right?

Adding a buttstock actually makes it so it can NEVER be an AOW!

AOWs, with one specific exception, can never have buttstocks.
the exception would be a "combo gun" with a rifled barrel and a smoothbore barrel between 12-14" (think a chopped varmint gun or M4 survival rifle)

by adding a buttstock, you just make it a shotgun with a buttstock
