Default Centre Hall Gun Show 800 Mossberg

I went to Centre Hall yesterday and, as usual, there was a lot of nice equipment along with nice people. (Not to mention only $4 to get in and great free parking). My first rifle was a new Mossberg 800 my Dad bought me and I always have a soft spot for them. I found this 800BV (.243 Win Varmint model) with a 5 – 20 Bushnell for the Princely sum of $375. From the serial number I am guessing it was made around 1969 - 1970. It is now in the collection!

Decent enough buy and sure looks in fine condition. 'course, .243's get burned a little faster than some other calibers -- how's the rifling? Better than $375 worth!?

It looked fine and I think it is ok. I thought I had some .243 around and I sort of did. I had some mixed casing hunting stuff I loaded 18 years ago. Even with that old stuff, it shot these targets. I will load some good stuff and try it again.

Someone had asked if these were made by Howa. The 800 was made by Mossberg in the USA with production starting around 1967. The model 1500 Mossberg, which came later, was made by Howa.

I remember when Mossberg ads of the 1970s showed the late actor Robert Stack peddling the Mossy 800 boltgun.
