Re: turkey hunter question?
no, for turkey hunting you want a super full choke.
an open choke would be pretty useless imo for turkey.
whats wrong with your current barrel? can you switch chokes? chances are his mossberg barrel is a mod or full.
i have a 10 gauge with a super full and can spread a 5x5' semi dense pattern at 40-50 yards
i wouldnt bother with anything less than a full choke, you can take one with a mod but you would have to be pretty close.

Re: turkey hunter question?
24" sounds like a slug barrel, most field barrels are 28".
Mossberg does list a 24" field barrel, but it is accu-set.... takes choke tubes.Last edited by fingers80002; September 12th, 2010 at 11:11 PM.

Re: turkey hunter question?
this 24" barrel is smooth bore with no choke just like my 18" home defense barrel, it's definitley not rifled! the only differance between my 18" and his barrel is his is 6" longer. so i guess i will just buy a 28" accu choke barrel!

Re: turkey hunter question?
I've used a full choke on Turkeys for years without any issues.
I'd check the barrel before buying. It should be labeled 'full'. If it's not, pass.
Once I saw a website that illustrated how to field test a shotgun choke with a coin. I wouldn't take it for gospel, but it would demonstrate if the barrel was cut down to a cylinder choke.
IMHO, modular chokes are the way to go. I'd save up some nickels to get the 'all in one' barrel.
