Default AR with 16 inch or less barrel?

I am curious, for AR's that have a barrel less than 16inch, its covered by the LTCF.

Are these rifles alot more then a normal AR-15? If not, where can I look into them? I'm just curious about the whole process.

Im not knowledgeable about the process, but a sub 16" rifle is not covered by your ltcf. Its considered a short barreled rifle which is a NFA item. I believe that you have to get a $200 tax stamp and the process is through the ATF which takes awhile.

Other people more knowledgeable will chime in i believe.

You are venturing into the NFA world with SBR's. AR uppers with the barrels less than 16" are on par or less than the longer barrels. They are also a dime a dozen and available from anyone making the larger AR parts generally. There is no supply and demand issue with them like with MG's that has driven up the price of MG's.

Anyone can buy a sub 16" barreled upper, it is not an NFA controlled item in of itself, just be cautious about having one around with AR lowers if you don't have an already registered SBR.

Figure out what SBR AR you want to build, then fill out the appropriate forms, submit your $200 tax, wait for approved form to get back, and then do your build. Or you may also purchase an existing made SBR. Read the stickies in the NFA section here.

for you. that way you wouldn't have to go the NFA route to have an AR with a barrel with less than 16" (or a buttstock) and it would be covered by the ltcf. right?

This is true. I am not sure. I am more so interested in an actual rifle. I'm not too sure on the AR pistol.

Read in the NFA section in this forum. Getting the tax stamp for an SBR isn't particularly hard, it just takes a long time and $200. If you want to go the rifle route instead of a pistol go for that tax stamp!!
