Default question on m1a socom II

What makes a Springfield Armory Socom II rifle second generation? Outside of the obvious answer that it was made at a later date, does it have something to do with the re-tuned gas system? I have been looking to buy one for some time but I want to know if I need to check that it is the second generation model. Thanks for any help.

IIRC the difference is the rail system. they both have the 16" barrel, the II has that side and lower ril where the 16 has just the top rail.

    i may be wrong.

    Thanks,

I actually called Springfield this morning and what you said is correct. I thought there were multiple generations of the socom II rifle but generation 1 = socom 16 and generation 2 = socom ii. I guess I just didn't understand why they needed two sets of names. Thanks for the reply.
