Hunting rifle advice
I need some help.
I would like to purchase a rifle to hunt whitetail deer with.
I am about 5 ft 5 and weigh about 110 lbs at the young age of 15.
I have already hunted with my rem 870 12 ga and have had no problems at all.
I am planning on purchasing a 270 win rem 700.
Would you agree with me?

Re: Hunting rifle advice
Remington 700 is a great bolt action rifle, its a very good choice, and the .270 caliber offers both long range varmint loads and medium sized game loads (whitetail , black bear)

Re: Hunting rifle advice
I've owned two Reminton 700 in 270. Both were 700 ADL, one was wood and the other synthetic stock.
Very, very nice and accurate rifles.
I bought them for my sons when they were your age.
Believe it or not, the 270 (to me) didn't seem to have much, if any of a lighter kick than my Savage 110FM 30-06.
But the simple fact that it was a smaller cartridge gave my sons at that age the confidence to shoot them without any fear/flinching of the recoil. They already knew from shooting it, that they didn't like the recoil from my 30-06.

Re: Hunting rifle advice
Do you have any trouble holding a hunting rifle up and keeping it steady when standing? This was a problem I struggled with when I was your size. If so, I would suggest getting a compact.
Ruger makes a nice one. Maybe some others would know of some other brands.

Re: Hunting rifle advice
Good choice of caliber. As to rifle choice, I would definitely go to a gunstore with a large selection of rifles and try several. You may find you like the safety on one and not another or you may want a detachable magazine instead of a floor plate.
Ruger's and Tikka's come with scope rings and mounts, that'll save you few dollars.

Re: Hunting rifle advice
While you have picked a classic rifle and caliber combination, if you are staying in Pa. it is more than you need. A short action in .308 or one of its offspring, .243, .260 etc might be a marginally better choice as they are both slightly lighter and recoil some what less, and are more than adequate for whitetails.
Get a good scope.

Re: Hunting rifle advice
I have several bolt guns in .308, 7mm mag, .300 WSM, etc. I also have an old Marlin lever action 30-30 that's taken more PA whitetails than any of the others combined & has been doing it for over 50 years of deer hunting. They're not as glamorous as other rifles, but they're inexpensive & they're ideal for PA deer hunting. IMO no PA gun safe is complete without one. Just another option.

look into the remington model 7 as well, .260 would be my recommendation for someone your size. It's light, weighs about 6.5lbs, isn't outrageously priced, holds accuracy well, you can really air it out(with the right bullets) and should last you a long long time. Plus, .260 won't be so ruthless on your shoulder but still give you good balistics. The Remington 700 however, has tons of aftermarket support(you can upgrade it to your heart's content), not so sure about the model 7.
hope that helps, let us know what you decide
