I'm not a CO but this is what I've gathered from my research. You are sent to corrections academy(about 5 to 6 weeks long) and if you aren't in good enough shape you won't graduate. You will likely receive a medical exam before you're even sent to academy so that they know you won't have a heart attack while you're there.

Chris are you a CO? I'm calling it an academy because that's what the CO's I've talked to called it.

I don't think anyone was comparing the two, and the word "academy" is not exclusive to law enforcement.. DoJ and LE are entirely different jobs within the same field, criminal justice. CO's in this state have no powers of arrest AFAIK and as such don't require anywhere near as much training as a police officer.

How long ago were you a CO? I was under the impression that the "training" was pretty much PT the entire time, defensive/offensive, restraints, some shotgun and handgun, with a small amount of legal stuff thrown in.

ETA: Oddly enough many of the CO's in my county jail are seriously over weight. That does make me questions the physical fitness aspect.
