Scoping a 44 mag- -what power?
I've got a S&W 44 mag that I'd like to scope up, and possibly deer hunt with in the future. I've never shot a scoped handgun.
I'm looking at Weaver scopes, and they offer a couple handgun scopes:
Variable: 1.5 - 4 x 20 or 2.5-8 x 28
Fixed power: 2 x 28 or 4 x 28
What would be a better choice for a 44?

Any of them should work fine. The one potential problem (solved with plenty of practice) could be finding your target when using the very top end of the 2.5-8.

Things to think about would be:
The range you plan to shoot at. I just started shooting a scoped .44 mag myself and right now it would appear the 100 yards is too far for me. Shots at that kind of distance are hard to find while hunting anyway.
Next you can consider the loads you are going to shoot. Heavy mag loads with alot of recoil can mess up a scope. Fixed power scopes have less moving parts to get knocked loose. Some variables can also have a change in eye relief at full magnification.
I will say this I intended to get a weaver 4x fixed just because I felt I didnt need any more magnification than that and the fixed power would have been more durable. What did I get at the end of all this. I found a Bushnell Trophy 2-6x in the Bagin Cave at Cabels for $99. The price was right I guess. I am very happy with this scope so far. Everything works and it shoots far better than me.
I dont think you will regret either of your choices.

I have a Bushnell 2-6x on my Super Redhawk. I hunt with it set at 2x, but did crank t up to 4x (I think) to take a broadside shot at 75yds on the last doe I took.
I use 6x when at the range.

I like fixed power scopes on revolvers, less to mess with. Something to think about is your ammo. If you zero for your preferred hunting load, you'll need to re-zero or learn to hold over or under for practice loads due to the change in muzzle flip.
I'd go for a 2X if I were you. The Weaver Classic is very clear, has great eye relief, and will get you there for the range of a 44 mag. A 4X will get you up close, but rested use is better because it's pretty wiggly free hand.
All that said, here are my scoped hunting revo's...
S&W 686 with a Weaver Classic 2X32...
Ruger Super Blackhawk with a Simmons 4X32 ProHunter...
Good luck on your decision! My Best, Walt

I went with a fixed 2x and find it just right for me.
