anyone have the new S&W SD9?
Saw one at Targetmaster today for $419 and was curious if anyone has one or fired one? Basically its the Sigma series pistol with a M&P trigger(as explained to me). Personally I loved the feel of the Sigma grip as thought it was the most comfortable pistol i have fired to date. Will probably pick one up anyway to have

Price seems very high, there are FS M&P's going used for that...

Well I think it is certainly nicer than the sigma, but the m&p is by far the more handsome gun, and I would personally save the extra 100 and go for a m&p.

I think you got it backwords.
It's basicaly a modified(heavily) sigma internal with M&P ergonomics.
My understanding is that it retains sigma's basic trigger design, but much improved, with adding M&P's replaceble back strap, and intended to fill the gap between sigma and M&P(pricewise)
I looked at one, and I didn't think it was bad looking pistol.
But I own M&P9, and don't see the need to change that to something else...Audemus jura nostra defendere

Re: anyone have the new S&W SD9?
There is no replacable backstrap on the SD. It's a Sigma frame with different texturing, and Picatinny rail. The slide release is the same thin stamped metal as the Sigma.
The slide is neither old Sigma nor M&P, looks very M&P without the aggressive serrations, but should serve its purpose as well as any. They did add just a tritium front sight.
The trigger on the old Sigma and M&P were similar, the Sigma just had a very heavy pull. Can't comment on the SD.
So in summary, it's a Sigma frame with a rail, new slide, a front night sight, and maybe a lightened trigger pull. Hopefully someone who has actually shot one can comment on the trigger pull.

I put some rounds through a friend's SD40 this morning. I really liked the pistol. Around here they run $410-ish. I may pick one of these up in the near future. It feels better in my hand than the M&P and has a much nicer trigger than the 9VE Sigma.

Re: anyone have the new S&W SD9?
Not to bring up an old thread or anything, but my EDC is an SD9.
I can attest that the trigger pull is substantial compared to a glock 23, but the travel is smooth and you have to mean to shoot if you want it to fire. I think the trigger pull is perfect for the designed usage of this weapon. I believe it's 11 lbs but don't quote me on that.
The SD9 holds 15+1, I'm currently carrying Winchester white box JHPs, and have shot some, uh, interesting ammo. From steel blazers to a box of my carry ammo, and I've only had 2 issues where the cartridge did not eject fully, and that was more my fault than the pistol (limp wristing).
It has some solid recoil with a full magazine, and even more with an empty one. Since it's a light polymer, a loaded mag weighs almost as much as the pistol itself.
The documentation specifically says not to use +P ammo, and I wouldn't, lest you find yourself the proud new owner of an unfortunately timed hand grenade.
I've heard a lot of complaints about the sigma series, and although I've never shot one myself, I think the SDs are pretty solid and I would recommend buying one.

This has me avoiding the SD guns like herpes.

Maybe an isolated problem, maybe not. For the other quality, tested guns in the price range, I wouldn't bother. Get an M&P if that's what you want.Selling off a a sizeable Spyderco collection here

I can't speak for the SD40, but my 9mm has never had a failure to fire.

Re: anyone have the new S&W SD9?
I have the Sigma 9mm and the M&P .40 both full size.
I also handled the SD 9 and 40 at the NRA show this weekend.
Without shooting it the SD trigger felt better than the Sigma but nowhere close to the M&P. The fit and finish as well as the frame to slide tolerance are much better on the M&P.
If S&W dropped the sigma and put the SD line near its price point it would be a worth while gun. But at the price you have it $100 gets you into the M&P line if you shop around or buy online.
My Sigma and M&P have been nothing but reliable.
If your willing to spend $420 save a bit longer and spend $520-550 you will not be sorry. Or look for a used M&P.
