    Default General suppressor question

I have been thinking about getting suppressor lately for my 10/22.

Since this would be my first suppressor purchase, and rather then suppress 9mm or bigger caliber guns I have, I thought suppress 22 caliber would be economical ways to get in to the game, which can become very expensive quick from what I hear(although, i eventualy like to get suppressor for my AR tho...).

I think I figured out the process, got the all the paper work I need, and figured out where to get finger printed localy.

My only question is I don't know which is better.

I know I want to suppress the 10/22.
I was originaly thinking about getting YHM's integral complete 10/22
    http://www.yhm.net/store/1022_Int.html

Its complete rifle with integral suppressed rifle, and local dealer got one, and I thought this is what I want(what made me think about getting in to suppressor in first place)

But I have to consider the the other way as well - which is to get a suppressor, threaded barrel, and convert one of threee 10/22 I have to suppressed 10/22.

It'll be little cheaper in the end, and with this way, I could swap the can from weapon to weapon, such as P22 or Mosquito(which I have had bad luck with both of them in the past)
But by adding suppressor to threaded barrel, it won't be no 18" barrel as YHM's 10/22 is either.

    So im torn.
as a first timer, which rount should I go

    No question about it.

    Get the thread on can.
Get a Tactical solutions 10/22 SBX threaded barrel for your Ruger. It's 16.5" OAL and no SBR is required.
thread adaptors for the Walther p22/Sig Mosquito/GSG5PK/GSG-1911/and the CZ 452 (for Squirels and 'hogs).

1 can, multiple hosts. lots of quiet shooting fun.

I would not buy an integral can.

You want to be able to move it from host to host.

You'll eventually get a walthers p22 or some other .22 pistol too. Hell, you might even get a .22 AR. Bottom line -- don't lock yourself in to an integral system.

Get the can, more options. Use it on a pistol or rifle. My can goes on the 522, mosquito and the 10/22.

    Bingo!

I can put my "can" on my Ruger MKII, 10-22, and my bolt rifle.

A .22 suppressor can only be used on a .22. On the other hand, a .223 can could be used on any .22, and on any AR-15, or Mini-14, or any other .223/5.56 rifle.

No matter what you get, you've got the $200 tax, and the hassle of the paperwork and the wait. Might as well get the beefier .223 unit.

But if you want a dedicated .22 can, go with Tom Bowers.

In my experience .223 cans are not as effective for .22 RF duty. But, Yes, they will do for a .22 what they will do for a .223. Make it a lot more quiet.

The down side - and to me a very big down side is that a .223/5.56 can weighs a ton more than a .22 can.

    Just for comparison sake,

A Gemtech Outback II .22 can weighs 2.5 oz. A Gemtech Halo .223/556 can weighs 21 oz.

So, that’s 19 extra oz hanging off the end of your walthers p22 pistol.

Also, the diameter of the .223 / 5.56 can is going to be greater making it hard to see and use the pistol sights because they will be blocked by the fatter can.

Lastly, a few can manufactures do not recommend doing the .22 and .223/5.56 because of the lead build up shooting .22. Thus potentially causing blockage and higher pressure when switching from .22 to .223/5.56.

I'm more of the mind set to get one of each instead of trying to skimp and use one for both. The trade offs are not worth the cost savings to me.

There's another aspect to consider in your scenario. No .22 handgun will run with a HALO on the end of it.

Don't know where the line is between .223 suppressor mass and .22 RF suppressor mass, but if you are buying a rifle suppressor (not to mention full-auto rifle rated) you should ask if it will work on a handgun.
