ar to select fire?
I realize that the cost would be tremendous, but can a semi AR Colt be legally converted to select fire? I know there would be permits, etc, but I'm just wondering at this time what it would take cost wise and parts to do it.

Re: ar to select fire?
You cannot legally manufacture a machine gun. The gun would already have to be registered under pre-existing NFA.
You will get in a huge amount of legal troubles if found manufacturing your own machine gun.
The only NFA items you can legally make (through the correct process): Suppressors, SBR's, SBS's.Last edited by NikeBauer21; August 20th, 2010 at 10:04 AM.

Re: ar to select fire?
Please check the sticky "Quick FAQ's related to machine guns and suppressors"
If your question is just about the techincal aspect of it, its pretty simple. You either need a registered receiver (RR) or a drop in auto sear (DIAS). A DIAS will run you about 10 grand and will modify a semi auto AR-15 to be fully automatic. Some AR-15 lowers will have to be slightly modified to fit the auto sear. Also you will need a full auto rated bolt carrier group. Some people prefer DIAS's to RR's because you can use it in multiple guns. Maybe some gunsmiths will chime in with some more detailed info. Good luck!Last edited by bac0nfat; August 20th, 2010 at 10:09 AM.

Registered Lightning Link will also do it, they can be found in the $6,000.00-$8,000.00 range.

Re: ar to select fire?
There will be a method available in the near future, about 3 to 5 years, to get two MG's for the price of one en route to wiping out the '86 ban which is what's keeping the price of existing MG's so high.
