Default Thinking about buying a .270 rifle for my son any ideas???

I am thinking about buying my son a 270 win to hunt deer and elk. Deer now and elk later. I really don't want to spend a lot of money (around $450.00).

He has a 30-30 lever action rifle, but most of the deer was around 200 - 300 yards away this year so he needs a rifle with a scope on it. He is 12 years old.

    Thanks for your help...

Look at the remington model 7 youth or the Model 700 SPS, both in 7mm-08. Most importantly they have relatively short LOP's quite suitable for his age. Whatever you choose, a short LOP is important.

Length Of Pull. The stock dimension from the face of the trigger to the back of the buttstock.

If it's too long, when the shooter mounts the rifle it will have a tendency to slip out of the shoulder pocket and upon firing, the stock can strike the ulnar nerve that runs through the shoulder down into the arm. This is what causes so much pain.

The Model 7 youth and 700 SPS have LOP's of 12 3/8 inches whereas most rifle LOP's are 13.5 to 14.0 inches.

ETA: As an adult male at 5' 11" I run LOP's at 12.5 inches. The factory 13.5 to 14.0 LOP's are too long for most people.

Got it. He is a tall kid with long arms. I want to get him something that he can use when he is an old man.

I went hunting with a guy that was using a 270 and he killed an elk dead in its tracks at about 400 yards. I was impressed as I was carrying a 300 wby mag and have done the same but his rifle was cheaper. LOL

    Thanks...

My dad, my brother, and myself all have Remington 700 BDLs, and we all love them. This is the only gun I will hunt deer with. All of ours are different. All are bolt action, but only two have drop plates, my brother shoots 150 grain, my dad's has a nicer stock, etc.

Overall, they are great guns. My dad bought mine for me when I was about 14 (and one for my brother about the same age). They were used and ran him about $500. His he bought new and ran him close to $600, IIRC.

But they are great guns and deserve some consideration.

I've been thinking about trading in my Reminton 760 30.06 for a bolt .270 for awhile now... It's a great gun and I have no problems with it, but I like the .270 a little better...
