The slide on my M&P is rusting
The slide on my M&P has gained some rust in a few places.
Anyone else have this happen? It is my daily carry weapon, but I still don't think this should happen. My main backup mag is also rusting.

join the club :/ my slide and mags rust regularly... I use my M&P pro for IDPA and I handle it alot while sweaty during the summer. Steel wool and aggressive oiling helps me keep it in check.

A daily carry gun needs to be cleaned and oiled on a regular basis. Depending on how you carry, sweat and/or rainy, damp, or humid days take it's toll on a gun. Holsters can also retain moisture, that should also be taken into consideration.

Re: The slide on my M&P is rusting
its blued, its what happened when a gun is not taken care of.. that gun is almost totally free of any surface oil.
careful use of triple fine steel wool and oil will remove it.
keep your blued guns, and high carbon stainless guns oiled, you've neglected the maintenance on your carry gun, and it shows."Oderint Dum Metuant" - BMFH

Man that Gun and Mag looks awful, Get rid of it and buy a quality Gun.
For a Gun that sells for more than a Glock you would think it has better metal treatment , it looks like a rust bucket. My God!

Re: The slide on my M&P is rusting
I dunno man. It appears to me that you haven oiled it after every time you carried it, and stored it body sweat and oils will make it rust overnight I'd you don't wipe it down and oil it before putting it to bed. Mine has the same thing happening when I forget to give it a rub down after the days over but no where near as bad as yours. Mostly just on the slide serrations and the rear sight.
Learn to get into the habit of wiping it down ever night with a good gun oil to prevent any future rust.Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Re: The slide on my M&P is rusting
Wow, and I considered getting one of those for a birthday gift for myself next month.. M&P's are blued? Why not some type of finish like glock/xd? Do they save money by bluing over applying a special finish, or is it some kind of tradition S&W is hanging on to?
I've not wiped down some of my carry guns for -lengthy- periods of time if they weren't shot at all. I've never had a rust problem, but then I've never owned a blued gun.

M&P's aren't blued. They have a surface finish. The mags are blued if I'm not mitaken.
I just noticed a bit of surface rust on mine as well. I've had it for years and just now rusted after being stored in a humid basement for a few weeks. I buffed it off in about 30 seconds. Good to go.
