Two encounters - "It's because of all the sensitive equipment!"
On my way to work this morning, I stopped at a Wawa to get my morning coffee. As I was checking out, a gentleman in full military BDUs came in (probably from the local recruiting office). Now, I usually make it a habit to thank obvious military personnel for their service, whatever that may be, so when I was in my car afterwards and he came out to his truck parked next to me, I rolled down the window and did so.
"Oh thanks, I really appreciate that!"
I got ready to roll the window back up and go on my way when -
"Hey, wait a sec - I wanted to ask you, are you like, a detective or something?"
Now, bear in mind what I was wearing - I was dressed nicely for work with khakis and a nice, blue, button down collared shirt. When I was putting my coffee together, I actually realized just how much like a cop I looked today, so when he said that, it made me chuckle.
"No no no, just a citizen."
"And you pack that kind of heat?!"
"Everywhere!"
*bursts into laughter* "That's fucking awesome! Hey, does anyone ever give you shit for that?"
"I get a few looks, and I've been stopped by the police a couple of times, but I always make sure what I am doing is legal and correct."
"How about that. I have a license to carry firearms," (yes, he did call it an LTCF) "...but I don't carry openly, because I just get sick of all the looks I get from people."
"Well, some people think it's kindof scary, but 95% of people don't ever notice, honestly."
"Really? Because that was the very first thing I noticed when I walked in the store!"
"Well, of course, you've been trained to identify potential threats. Very few people are situationally aware enough to notice it, believe it or not."
"Huh. How about that."
I bid him farewell and off we went.
Then, this afternoon, I got a phone call that my grandmother was in the hospital. Long story short, she's been fighting cancer for going on ten years now, and she's coming to the end of her road. I went to visit her, and as I was leaving afterwards, the "security guard" (the dude that makes you sign in at the front desk) got my attention.
"I'm sorry, but what, um, uh, which organization are you with, because firearms aren't allowed in the hospital - I didn't see that when you came in or I would have told you so."
"I'm not with any organization - I'm just a civilian."
"Okay, well, we don't allow guns in here, it's hospital policy, it's because of all the sensitive equipment. Only law enforcement personnel and township officials can carry in here."
I was so blown away by the inherent stupidity of this man, I literally couldn't think of anything to say other than,
"Okay, thanks, I'll keep that in mind next time."

You should have asked him what magical power LEO's guns have, that yours does not... since yours has potential to affect sensitive equipment and theirs does not.

Did you ask to see a copy of the hospital's non-firearms policy?

There's not point in OC'ing at a hospital, 9.9 out of 10 times they're going to call the police, ask you to leave, let security store it in a locker, or put it in the car. People go to hospitals because they HAVE to, so OC'ing should be avoided when more important things are present.
I OC daily, this is just my opinion. When I have to go to the hospital because of an emergency, I'll simply CC and avoid any bullshit. I KNOW I'll be asked to leave, and being there with my family/friends is more important than OC'ing, to me.
Lessons learned by the experience of others are better than learning them the hard way yourself.Last edited by jcabin; August 10th, 2010 at 02:55 PM.

That is good of you to go out of your way to let our military people know that we appreciate what they do. Rep sent
