Looking for suggestions...
I'm in the market for a service size handgun. Can be a semi or a revolver, but preferably semi. Any suggestions, and why. Thanks

Re: Looking for suggestions...
A CZ.
Why:
They're absolutely rock-solid reliable (my CZ-75B has had approx 6700 rounds through it with only 3 double-feeds, and that was all with one particular brand of ammo).
The weight/balance/grip is perfect.
The sight picture is perfect, and the natural point of aim allows me to shoot them more accurately than any other pistols I've owned.
They have a proven track record.
They're quite affordable.
I own a CZ-75B, and SP-01 Phantom, and a CZ-2075 RAMI, and would go to any one of them, before my Glock or my S&W M&P.
So yes, I'm most definitely a fan. Others will make some fine recommendations to be sure. But, I sincerely doubt you'd be disappointed in any way with a CZ."I don't care what went wrong. I beat the snot out of it until it works" - Clint Smith

Go to a range that rents guns and try 'em out. What works for someone may not work for you.

Have to throw in my .02
1911. Huge market for them, if you want a competition gun, drop a few grand, and you are set. You want something to toss in your trunk and not worry about scratches or dings, you can drop $300, and be good to go.
It is a tried and true design, and almost all, if not all major firearm manufacturers have a 1911, or a variant of the design.
You can find them in any finish, from parkerized, to polished. Not to mention almost everything in between.
Most manufactured parts are interchangeable. You want a new barrel? You want a compensator? You want grips that look like the grips from *insert movie here*? All can be found, and normally for a great price.
However, all those things aside, I agree with Dave. What works for some, doesn't work for all. You really need to get your hands on a few different models, and see what fits you best.I'm so fast, I can bump fire a bolt action.

Such a broad request...
Can you be a little more specific? Maybe a budget?

If you have a leaning toward an auto, the HK P7 PSP. You can get one in Grade A condition from Top Gun for about 700 USD.

The magazine release is on the heel of the frame, but with practice it is fast and smooth. This handgun needs nothing more then a front night sight and a good holster and you are ready to carry. The surprising accuracy and precision, the all steel construction (heavy but strong), the fluted chamber that ejects shell casings even if the extractor breaks off, the low bore to hand axis and the unique mechanism make this a stand out. These German police pistol turn ins are not going to last forever.
Shoot one and you will be a convert.Join the groups protecting your rights from the fools trying to take them from you!

Re: Looking for suggestions...
Is the gun for self defense, carry, range toy, or just to own?

I'd suggest one of these if you've got a few extra dollars laying around. I might be biased because I want one rather badly.

I suggest the reliable Beretta Centurion 92/96 you can practice DA and single action shooting with one gun. That will keep you use to shooting a DA revolver (though most high quality revolvers triggers are smoother) and you still have the short trigger of a SA semi auto. Plus have a top quality Semi auto pistol. That will shoot almost anything that loads.
