Ohio questions
I have a valid PA LTCF and I plan on making a trip into Ohio tomorrow. I want to take my handgun with me. I know I can not carry it while in Ohio but how would I transport it into Ohio and back into PA or should I just leave it at home?

Re: Ohio questions
On this point, Ohio isn't too bad (their carry restrictions are horrible). You can have an unloaded handgun either in plain sight with the action open (why??) or in a closed commercial case. AND having a loaded magazine/speedloader (en bloc clips are OK for you M1 fans) anywhere in the vehicle "loads" the gun.

Re: Ohio questions
This is an email I received from the OH AG's office regarding carrying a firearm in a vehicle without a license honored by OH.
RE: CCW (OH)
Dear Constituent:
Thank you for your inquiry concerning concealed weapons reciprocity agreements between Ohio and Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, no agreements between these states currently exist.
Please note that Ohio law requires the Attorney General to craft reciprocity agreements with other states to allow Ohioans with permits to carry weapons in those jurisdictions and for those states' citizens to carry weapons in Ohio. These agreements require an analysis of those other laws to ensure they meet the requirements of Ohio's concealed weapons law and vice versa (ORC 109.69). You may view the most up-to-date list at www.ag.state.oh.us/web_applications/concealcarry/reciprocity.asp.
If there is any state of interest not identified on this list, it would be for one of the following reasons:
· State in question has laws that vary significantly from those of Ohio, or;
· State has no interest in entering into such an agreement with the State of Ohio. (It is most advisable that anyone traveling through a state of questionability contact the Attorney General's office of that state prior to visiting the area.)
With respect to your concerns as associated with carrying firearms in a motor vehicle, Ohio Revised Code § 2923.16 (C) makes reference to non-CCW permit holders and states the following;
No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless it is unloaded and carried in one of the following ways:
· In a closed package, box or case;
· In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;
· In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;
· In plain sight with the action open or the weapon stripped, or if the firearm is of a type on which the action will not stay open or which cannot be easily stripped, in plain sight.
Ohio law states that you may not transport a loaded, concealed handgun in a vehicle unless you possess either an Ohio-issued CCW permit or one that is issued by a reciprocity state.
Should you wish to obtain further information on Ohio's Concealed Carry Laws you can visit our website at www.ag.state.oh.us .
Again, thank you for contacting our office. I hope that you find this information helpful.
Sincerely,
NANCY H. ROGERS

Re: Ohio questions
I have another related Ohio question.
Say I do have a UT licence and can carry in Ohio. I still cannot carry where liquor is surved.
My vehicle does not have a seperate passenger and cargo area and has no locking compartements inside.
Could I store the fireamr loaded inside only the locked car in the glove compartment or would I need another case that possiably locks to keep it while I am storing the loaded firearm in the vehicle?
Again this is assuming I have a licence from a state that Ohio has an agreement with like UT.

Re: Ohio questions
Ohio has some funny laws about where you can carry in a vehicle, even with a license. And I think even that changed recently. And it's a "must inform officer" state, even for passengers. If you don't get the answer you're looking for here, check out http://www.buckeyefirearms.org

Re: Ohio questions
If you have a recognized CCW credential you can have a loaded firearm in your vehicle, in the passenger compartment:
- In the glove box, locked or not.
- In the closed center console, locked or not.
- On your person in a holster. A "ClipDraw" or "HipGrip" don't count.
- In a closed container with some sort of fastening mechanism, like a clasp, snaps or a zipper (think gun rug, gun box, briefcase or purse).
- In a closed, locked container out of sight.
And no, you cannot carry into an establishment which has a Class D ("by the drink") liquor license. Be aware that almost NONE of the Class D establishments I've seen are posted in any way. This includes Chipotle. If in doubt, leave the gun in the glove box until you find out. My favorite family restaurant (Michaels in Rocky River) has a Class D liquor license. They used to have wine bottles on the tables, but removed them. After those bottles were removed, you could spend an entire evening there without knowing they were a Class D establishment. It wasn't until they recently put in a new cooler by the cash register with beer and wine in it that it was obvious that they still sold alcohol for on premises consumption.Je suis Charles Martel.

Re: Ohio questions
Every Chipotle I have ever been to in Ohio has a sign posted about no weapons. I have a condo in Ohio and I am from there and am very familiar with the gun laws. The signs in Chipotle are inside on the boards usually close to the bathrooms.
You can transport your firearms, in one of the above post clearly describes how to. Don't forget Ohio is a "Open Carry" state and you can carry openly.

Re: Ohio questions
I'm going to add another question to the mix here. While I am in the process of getting a UT permit. It will be Nov-Dec before I get the class done and it gets submitted, processed and arrives.
In the meantime I have a requirement to be on foot in a not so great area of Youngstown in the near future to escort my girlfriend to the grave site of a family member.
I'm assuming I can transport one of my firearms unloaded and with all magazines unloaded locked in a container (no trunk, hatchback car) with the ammunition in its factory box. Upon arrival exit my vehicle load the firearm and carry it openly. When I get back to my car unload the firearm and all magazines and store it in a locked container witht he ammunition in the factory box and be %100 legal the whole way.
I have this question posted in a Ohio firearm forum but figured id post here as well.
