I have a couple questions about the application.

Can I just print this out and submit it or do I need to go down and pick one up?

Can I use abbreviations?

Whats the correct syntax for birth place? I am guessing City, County, State

The Sheriff's department puts the applications on thier website in PDF format so folks may download them and print them. I would suggest using a PDF editor and filling the PDF out on the computer, and then printing it. Be sure to print page 2 on the back!

Abbreviations are fine, as a deputy will have to manually re-enter all the info into the court system computer to process it, and can adjust any syntax issues then.

Once the form is filled out, take it and $26 (in cash) to the Erie County Court House. There is a special elevator which you must take to get to the Sheriff's office, just ask the guards at the front door where it is.

In all likelyhood, you'll meet with the firarms sargent at the time you submit the application, who will take your $26 and picture, and go over your application with you a bit. If you don't seem like a wacko during the interview, and don't have a criminal record, you'll likely get your permit via postal mail in 7 days.

Yeah, it's a painless process. They have the applications there. I just went and filled it out and had to go into the office and get my picture taken. The guy said "You'll have your license in the mail in a week or so" and I had it in 7 days exactly.

I can legally carry in over thirty states, including Pennsylvania. I'm FBI cleared and carry/defensive pistol trained.

So you're a resident of Canada? How do you carry in over 30 states...a Florida or Utah permit? If you're legal in PA with the permit you have, no need to get one from Erie sheriff.

The PA (Uniform Firearms Act) UFA reads as follows on issuance, mentions residents of other states, but not other countries.
(e) Issuance of license.--
(1) A license to carry a firearm shall be for the
purpose of carrying a firearm concealed on or about one's
person or in a vehicle and shall be issued if, after an
investigation not to exceed 45 days, it appears that the
applicant is an individual concerning whom no good cause
exists to deny the license. A license shall not be issued to
any of the following:
(i) An individual whose character and reputation is
such that the individual would be likely to act in a
manner dangerous to public safety.
(ii) An individual who has been convicted of an
offense under the act of April 14, 1972 (P.L.233, No.64),
known as The Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and
Cosmetic Act.
(iii) An individual convicted of a crime enumerated
in section 6105.
(iv) An individual who, within the past ten years,
has been adjudicated delinquent for a crime enumerated in
section 6105 or for an offense under The Controlled
Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act.
(v) An individual who is not of sound mind or who
has ever been committed to a mental institution.
(vi) An individual who is addicted to or is an
unlawful user of marijuana or a stimulant, depressant or
narcotic drug.
(vii) An individual who is a habitual drunkard.
(viii) An individual who is charged with or has been
convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a
term exceeding one year except as provided for in section
6123 (relating to waiver of disability or pardons).
(ix) A resident of another state who does not
possess a current license or permit or similar document
to carry a firearm issued by that state if a license is
provided for by the laws of that state, as published
annually in the Federal Register by the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms of the Department of the
Treasury under 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(19) (relating to
definitions).
(x) An alien who is illegally in the United States.
(xi) An individual who has been discharged from the
armed forces of the United States under dishonorable
conditions.
(xii) An individual who is a fugitive from justice.
This subparagraph does not apply to an individual whose
fugitive status is based upon nonmoving or moving summary
offense under Title 75 (relating to vehicles).
(xiii) An individual who is otherwise prohibited
from possessing, using, manufacturing, controlling,
purchasing, selling or transferring a firearm as provided
by section 6105.
(xiv) An individual who is prohibited from
possessing or acquiring a firearm under the statutes of
the United States.
(3) The license to carry a firearm shall be designed to
be uniform throughout this Commonwealth and shall be in a
form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police. The license
shall bear the following:
(i) The name, address, date of birth, race, sex,
citizenship, height, weight, color of hair, color of eyes
and signature of the licensee.
(ii) The signature of the sheriff issuing the
license.
(iii) A license number of which the first two
numbers shall be a county location code followed by
numbers issued in numerical sequence.
(iv) The point-of-contact telephone number
designated by the Pennsylvania State Police under
subsection (l).
(v) The reason for issuance.
(vi) The period of validation.
(4) The sheriff shall require a photograph of the
licensee on the license. The photograph shall be in a form
compatible with the Commonwealth Photo Imaging Network.
(5) The original license shall be issued to the
applicant. The first copy of the license shall be forwarded
to the Pennsylvania State Police within seven days of the
date of issue. The second copy shall be retained by the
issuing authority for a period of seven years. Except
pursuant to court order, both copies and the application
shall, at the end of the seven-year period, be destroyed
unless the license has been renewed within the seven-year
period.

Ohio resident here with a state of ohio CCW license. looking into getting the PA license due to alot of travel thru the state. Ex moved my kids to Pottsville PA. What are the requirements? do i have to go in person to get a PA license, or can i mail in everything? and what is the cost associated for a nonresident?

In person only. Bring your money, ID and permit from your state of residence. They will mail it back to you generally (your PA permit) but you MUST apply in person.

Check out the Sheriff's Office you are going to online and by calling first. NOT ALL are non-resident friendly. Erie is. So is Centre for sure, Sheriff Danny Nau is outstanding.

I am presently resident in Toronto but will be changing that to FL soon enough. PA State Police will NOT permit me to submit a CPIC check (same as NICS) directly from RCMP, nor will they put me through the PA state system (PICS?). PA does not use NICS so having all the permits in the world from other states will mean nothing, except for that permit from your home state, should they ask.

Good luck. Sheriff Nau's office is like greased lightening with apps and I hear nothing but good things about Erie. We are going to be taking a trip stateside this summer and my permits from other states cover me in PA, but would like to have the PA permit nonetheless. Once we close on our property in FL will become a US resident again and get the FL resident permit as well as PA non-resident. We travel so much it is "the more the merrier" until a National Reciprocity Act is passed that will protect us everywhere.

NY has gotten so bad that even with permits from several other states and from Canada (i.e. I am legal where I start and end my journey) I gather that NY state is nail biting territory as you are likely to be charged/arrested despite FOPA.

Be sure you know the LATEST laws and procedures in every state you will be travelling through and that you have either a lockable TRUNK or TWO safes in the back of your SUV, one for the gun, the other for the EMPTY mags and ammo. That's what we do. TWO safes in the back of each SUV. Harbour Freight $50 for a decent one (get the one with rubber buttons if you can, the plastic keypads break with luggage in the back).
