I just renewed and did not have to.

Online or paper? It was my online renewal last fall that required that all fields
be filled out. My paper app from 5 years ago was left blank and approved.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

I printed off of the web page then went in person.

Only the county that was sued, somewhere in the southeast of PA, isn't required to list references due to the agreement between that sheriffs office, the plaintiff, and the court.

ALL other counties can require the references if they chose.

And as I stated in this Erie County specific thread, the Erie County Sheriff is NOT requiring it right now.

Neither is the York County Sheriff, but even back to 2008 my references were not checked
even when I included them. Our Sheriff Keuerleber is pretty pro-2A, and everyone I have
met within his domain seems equally so.
Once I discovered my references weren't checked I began leaving them off, as well as marking
    employment/employer fields marked simply "N/A".

I have always received my LTCF either on the spot or within 48 weekday hours.

IIRC, both sets of fields go back to a much older version of the Uniform Firearms Act
when those things were statutorily required to obtain your license/permit.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.
