That was really wild. Especially the behavior by the Trooper, threatening people to protect your rights.

From reading your post, it seemed to me your parents live in a developed community. Why did the PSP respond? There are no local cops?
They live in Gap which is Salsbury, Twp.. They don't have local cops. It's patroled by PSP.

I think the cop was protecting my rights because of the way the neighbor came over screaming and yelling that I had a gun. He had his arms in the air and his face was red as a fire truck cause he was screaming so loud.

He was probably just covering his ass. He's investigating a report of a guy with a gun, the guy has a gun, the cop was cool to him but if he left and the OP then went commited a crime with that gun the cop has cover as to why he didn't prevent it from happening because you know he'd get blamed.

Unless/until the cop demanded it, or gave him a hard time for refusing to hand it over, I'm not willing to pass judgment on the cop for a polite request.

I'm used to saying "Lancaster State Police" cause that's the barracks they come from. My bad.

no...that would be inviting trouble, imho.

also, it sounds like the trooper already took care of it.

great job by that trooper, btw. you might consider sending a note of appreciation to his superiors.

That makes sense. They don't like taking shit from anyone. Thanks for the clarification.

    What a bizarre story.

    Rep to the PSP.

WHY do so many people equate exercising your rights as "giving the police a hard time"???

the police are under no duty to prevent crime or protect citizens so other then bad pr what is he covering his ass against? clearly i'm in the minority here so I'll just leave this thread alone.

I wouldn't have shown him my LTCF, but at least he knew you were not breaking the law.

And I don't know that I would talk to the neighbor. It might help to give him a flyer, and try to talk to him. But, from the way he acted, I don't think it would do any good.

Read the OP's account again. I never had the impression that the LEO "knew the laws and just didn't care". He requested, not demanded, to see an LTCF, to which the OP acquiesced.

Why do some of you get all wigged out about police requests? They're allowed to ask you just about anything they want to ask. The OP was free to present his LTCF or withhold it - note the "free" part, as in "freedom", as in I'll do what I want and you do what you want.

When police ask suspects to submit DNA evidence (without a warrant), are they "being dicks"?

Hey man. I ain't trying to give you a hard time. I just simply answered as to why I gave the LEO my LTCF. I'm a very easy going guy. If no one gives me a hard time, I'm not gonna give them a hard time. Everyone would handle the situation differently. This is the way I handled it for myself.
