Default Defense gun for my partner.

I own and practice with my Glock 19 9mm. I'm also a former United States Marine. This is all great and dandy except... I'm not always home, and I can't always be around.

My girlfriend has an interest in firearms and self defense. She's gone with me to the range and though she lacks experience her grouping is pretty decent. With the recent rise in home invasions in Northeast Philadelphia I don't feel particularly comfortable leaving her unarmed and alone with the kids all day. I've considered leaving my Glock at home with her but really she needs training and a sidearm of her own... What do you all recommend?

I'd say get her her own Glock 19 if she shoots it well. Or maybe a 26.

I recommend you take her to a gunshop and let he handle all the pistols she wants. Don't rule out revolvers either.

Also have her read this website. Its geared toward women and firearms. http://corneredcat.com/

if she likes shooting your G19 and shoots it well, i would strongly suggest getting another one of those.

as they say...two is one, one is none.

having two guns either of you can use without having to adjust, that fit in the same holsters, being able to cannibalize for parts if needed, being able to share mags and ammo, etc. etc. is very valuable, imho.

And if it's going to be purely a home gun, consider a G17. More capacity, less recoil, slightly longer slide for slightly better sight picture. Grip is no wider, just longer.

That's a good idea. I haven't ruled out revolvers! They were my first considering since theyre easier to carry/conceal. Tend to look more like a random bulge than a gun when worn under clothes.

That's a very good idea with very good reasoning behind it! I should've considered this myself! Duh! lol.

Good Idea with valid points. Though I think that after possesing her own "Home Gun" she will soon after get a LTCF of her own and keep it on her at all times. I know when I purchased my G19 I intended for it to be a "Home Gun" but then when I did leave it at home I felt like it was a huge liability to be left home.

First of all, revolvers are neither easy to conceal (usually wider then semi autos) nor are they default "ladies guns." I know, you did not entirely say that OP yet many think that and I wanted to clear the air.

Here is a great idea, take your better half to Classic Pistol in Southampton (short drive from you) and rent a bunch of different pistols and revolvers for her to try. There may even be a group shoot coming up that would cost a bit less and may even be fun.

Let her decide what she likes. My woman loves her hard kicking sub compact Kahr in 9mm, I personally cannot stand that thing. However, I am a wheel gun guy.

You may also want to drop a few hundred on a great .22 auto like a Ruger Mark III. You can more easily teach the basics, ammo is less expensive and you yourself may even improve in your abilities. Getting the basics down is key to shooting well. Heck, I will be at CP tonight shooting my .22's and a revolver or two...

Classic Pistol is where we always go to shoot

I dont have my own membership, or the money to buy one right now so I only go when my friend plans on going because it's too expensive otherwise!

I have to go with the wheel gun. A Ladysmith should be just about right. Simple, sure and easy to use.

Funny thing, I'm doing the same thing right now for my better half. We just shot this past week when I went home(USP Tactical and USP Compact in .40 and an XD 45). Mine is set on a USP Compact in .40. Next friday we when I come back home, we are going to King Shooter Supply (www.betterbullets.com). A good friend of mine works there and he will further help her decide on what is good for her. I'm skipping off the Southeast Asia for a few months in less then a month and my other half works in Coatesville. I want her to be able to defend herself when i cannot. She shoots both .40 and .45 well, so hopefully we can find something that fits her a tad better then my USP Compact but still has the power. She already ruled out revolvers. I know where your coming from on this, it's almost instinctual.
