Default how would this be for a home defense gun?

I would imagine you could get larger mags for this.

depends on your thoughts of a .410 for home defense. Personally I wouldn't go that small, but people have gotten deer with a .410 more than once so i'm sure you COULD use it.
get the saiga-12.. same gun but a 12guage

    Ironhorse,

10rd mags are available for the .410s but ya gotta get them shipped in from England. They arn't the cheapest things either but the seller over there is top notch and very easy to work with. That being said MDarms is kicking around the idea of adapting his MD-20 (20 rd 12 gauge drum) to work with the .410 shells.

It'd be fine with slugs and/or buckshot shells. At 5-15ft, even birdshot would make one hell of a mess at out of someone. The shot wont have time to spread very far and will act very much like a single projectile.

birdshot won't adequately penetrate and i don't think you can get buckshot larger than #2, which is still very marginal. Slugs might work, but then all you have is really a low capacity, inaccurate pistol caliber carbine. Why not just go with a rifle?

Actually, S&B and Winchester make 3" 00 buckshot rounds.

indeed they do. It's going to be pretty marginal.

For me living in an apartment, a 45ACP or 12guage is my answer for HD.

Well for home defense, nothing says "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE" like the sound of a 12 ga Pump getting racked.
