Barrel threading question
I'm looking to pick up a bolt rifle in .223. I also would like to get the barrel threaded to accept a flash suppressor or maybe (hopefully) a can. I'm currently looking at a Savage Model 12 FLV. It looks like everything I want, but is it possible to thread a bull barrel down to 1/2x28 thread to accept AR accessories and a suppressor?

Re: Barrel threading question
You would have to have a gunsmith turn it down and thread it in a lathe. It would cost you about $150-200.

Re: Barrel threading question
So it can be done despite the thick barrel? I guess they just need to turn it longer. I'm sure they could make me a thread protector also that would build it out to the original thickness. Is this plan ok, or is it stupid?

Re: Barrel threading question
The gunsmith would have to take off more material than a thinner barrel, if that is what you mean by "turn it longer".
I am sure they could machine a thread protector if you intend on using it without a flash suppressor, but why? If you want to shoot it without the flash suppressor then I would consider a different type of muzzle brake instead of having a custom made thread protector.
Something like this:

Re: Barrel threading question
Great ideas, guys! This is why I ask. It looks as though buying a nice looking muzzle brake would be about as expensive as getting a thread protector made.

Re: Barrel threading question
I would suggest you find a gunsmith you want to have do the work and ask their advise on your intended purchase, along with the flash suppressor and muzzle brake you want to buy.
The muzzle brake would need some additional fitting. Having everything done at one time should net you a better price on the work.

Re: Barrel threading question
Savage offers the axis with those threads. Also more along the lines you mentioned is the savage model 10fspr. Comes with a flash hider, but not sure on the 1/2 threads.

Re: Barrel threading question
The FSPR in 223 has the 1/2" threads as well. Pretty sure both are right handed only though.
