    Default S&W 12-2

    Finally went for a lightweight 38. I wanted a more "old school" style, and finally stumbled across a Smith and Wesson 12-2 M&P with 2" barrel in nickel on gunbroker. Finish is not perfect, a few "flecks" in the nickel, and some honest light wear - but I had been seeing them go for $ 400 + and got this one for $ 299. Grips are in great shape but I touched them up a bit with some dn alcohol and boiled linseed and they now look new. Just finishing up some deep cleaning and waiting for the blo to dry and I'll post some shots - I think I'm going to like it - very light, a tad larger than a J frame, nice

    Like I said, some honest wear, but took it to the range today, and it's real smooth. Still think my $299 was a good deal

    Cruzans;
    From my "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wessons":
    12-2 introduced in 1962
    it appears that you have the standard (not flat latch) thumb piece these were introduce in 1966
    the book lists 1967 as begins D serial Prefix?
    lists 1968 as the year that diamond grips were deleted (you have diamond grips).

    So,
    It is post 1962 as it is a 12-2 (pre 1977 as it isn't a 12=3)
    It has the standard (humped) thumb piece and these weren't introduced until
    1966.
    It has the diamond grips and these were discontinued in 1968.
    It appears to my semi-knowledgeable self that you have a 1966-68.
    A letter to the factory could get you when it was manufactured and who it was originally shipped to but that costs money. My ignorant guesses are free!! If you ever want to sell I live just over the Mt.
