    Default Shotgun Cleaning...

Hey guys, I just picked up my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500. It will be used for HD.

When I shoot handguns, I field strip and clean with solvent and then lube them back up every time I fire them.

I understand that the Mossberg field strip is a little more involved, requiring the removal of pins.

For those of you that use a shotgun for defense, what cleaning procedure do you follow?

For a pump gun, I usually remove the barrel and clean it as I would a pistol barrel. Solvent, brush, patches till clean then some oil. Wipe out the action and done. MAYBE once a year I will detail strip it. I have an 870 that I have had for close to twenty years. I have NEVER detail stripped it. One final note on barrel cleaning. If you practice with a lot of slugs, you may find a gross amount of plastic build up in the barrel. A tornado brush (you can find them in most retail stores with the cleaning supplies) will strip the plastic out nicely. In a pinch, I have used a beat up brass brush with a bit of 0000 steel wool wrapped around it. Good luck with you new shotgun.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I have tried to break it down, but there is an ATI pistol grip/shoulder stock combination on there right now.

I have to remove the grip because it is keeping the trigger housing trapped in place.

Does anyone know what size hex screw I will need?

I use the $1 box of Chinese made tampons from the Dollar Store to clean my barrel.

I use a pull through - a bore snake - after every session. Then a bore mop with oil. Wipe down the outside with a silicon cloth. Put a light coat of Minwax paste finishing wax on the wood, let it dry, buff it off with a soft cloth. I will spray, sparingly, some fine synthetic oil like TSI 301 on to the bolt in a semi or a pump before and after use.
