    Default Water blasting...Rockets...

Does anyone remember the water rockets that usually were red and white plastic?

You filled about half way up with water and attached a pump to the nozzle and filled the rest of the rocket with compressed air (via hand pumping). then you turned right side up and released the slide and whoosh. You got wet. Memory may be greater than reality, but I think they went pretty high up.

Also, does anyone know a place locally that might have them? I saw on the internet once but were a bit steep in price. I live halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie.

I wanted my kids to enjoy that in the summer.

    Thanks.

    Yep, I remember them too.

We built something like that when we were little called the "doomsday Cannon" built on a (little red) wagon frame with a pipe on hinges and notches for elevation. It had a wooden breech and fired 2 liter bottles via the pressure from a garden hose. We had a few valves to control flow and we used a 30' section to build up pressure (the air compressed and released into the bottle via a slightly larger valve).

The result was a half filled bottle capable of destroying any tent in a 30-60 foot distance.

Good times! We didn't get wet but it was a fantastic piece of work for three young kids.

(on topic) no clue where you can find the rockets, sorry.

A staple of pre-safety childhood. There were two variants, a long one & a short model. Click on the images below to see a report on each one.

How much cheaper than $4 do you want to go?

Also, I've been away from this topic for a while. Apparently some folks have made some dramatic improvements with homemade water rocket performance. You might want to read up on what's happening in water-rocket world first. Making your own might be a good solution. (details)

Thanks, I will check into the links and look into the home builts.

Kids now-a-days seem to have no appreciation for some of the things we did as kids. We were almost never bored and never inside the house, even in winter. We had toys but we made up games, did lots of exploration etc.

I guess it is because of safety issues mainly, we try to keep them too close to home.

    But I digress.

    Thanks.
