Default I want an optic on my S&W 916...

This shotgun is old, and it's almost unheard of. I use it at the range, shooting clays, targets, and my new fun, shooting slugs at targets.

I took it out a little bit ago, to just try slugs out, and I loved it. I shot 5 at 25-30 yards with just the bead site, and scored great hits on the target.

I'd like to get better at shooting it a little further, but I'm sure the bead site wont be the preferred method.

I've been trying to google for my options, but it seems that every mount is for a specific type of shotgun, and mine is nowhere to be found.

What it comes down to, is there a generic shotgun mounting system that attaches around the barrel, or magazine region? or perhaps a system that will fit "universally" around the "main workings zone" of the shotgun. (pardon me, I don't know the proper term for that area of a shotgun.) Chamber, I'd imagine... Zone... region...

Thanks for the help, and if it matters, I think I'd want some sort of red dot apparatus. Something still functional for when I shoot trap.

Is the receiver steel if so a competent G-smith can install a mount.

As stated in other posts we went the red dot way several years ago. There is no bigger proponent of dots than us.

On a shotgun the less expensive Tasco/Simmons price range seem to work just fine.

Yes, it's steel. So what you are saying is just take it somewhere and say "please, may you make this gun be able to support a red dot site?"

    Sounds good.

Alright, well I've been all over the interwebz, and stumbled upon this great site:

    http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/...spx?catid=8069

So it looks like I'm gonna spend some money, and turn my free gun into something I can call my own, with a little customization. I also want to chop it down. 18 inches right?, give myself some breathing room. sounds good. Gettin excited. Maybe I'll document with a little picage.

    Hi THERE
I live in South Africa, and also owns a Smith & Wesson 916 pump action shotgun. I intend fitting a low powered scope, and use the gun with slugs on kudu, warthog and impala at short range.
StraussiE WousiE, how did your project go with fitting the red dot sight?
Is your gun a "full choke"? Mine is, and I don't know if I should cut the barrel back to behind the choke.
What sort of accuracy are you getting with slugs?
