    Default Shot Shell Help

    Hey guys,

Just loaded 10 shells and went to the range. I thought this load would be OK for sporting clays and such but this load kicked like a mule....

CCI 209M primers, 17 grains red dot powder, 1 1/8 oz of 7 1/2 shot. WAA12 claybuster wads.

After looking through my reloading manual, it doesn't seem like this should be a hard kicking load. What should I do to make it more shoulder friendly so that I can survive a 100 clay sporting course? Is it possible to load 1oz of shot into the 1 1/8 oz wads?

    Hello Moose

Can't help with your question, but what range in the Phile area do you go?

Sorry, that info is outdated. I have since moved back home to Woodstown, NJ. I go to the local sportsmens club.

Back in the day when I was running 250 rounds a weekend at the trap range I was running 14.7gr. of Red Dot behind 1 1/8oz of 7 1/2 shot and had no problems shooting all day.

Thanks MaDeuce. I'm trying to find out what bushing(?) are still available for this model reloader I have. Its an old Pacific Tool 366 progressive, which has since been bought by Hornady and still retains the new number, and I'm almost certain it has the same numbers. Now I just have to figure out which new bushings I wanna get....thanks for the info.

Hehe, after 10 rounds, I don't want to think about what 100 would have felt like.....lol

I usually bruise after the 100 rounds anyway. But this load just felt twice as powerful as my usual off the shelf shells. which after checking is a 3dram equivalent load but is 8 shot 1 1/8oz.

I think I need another reloading manual....is it OK to use Remington Premier Plastic Target Shells (the closest thing to the Remington Gun Club shells I use) that is listed in the manual?

Anyone know a manual that lists Gun Club hulls?

The Gun Club and Premier hulls should interchange...I believe the internal dimensions are the same.

Alliant's data will allow a drop in powder charge to 16.0 grains of RD with that primer and wad. It is a 2.5 dram equivalent. Try that. I wasn't able to find your exact load in the Alliant data....found 16.5 grains and 16.0 grains but not 17.0.

I know that recoil is subjective but the load that you cited is not a heavy load - Lyman classifies it as a target and light field load. I wonder about the fit of your gun. How do other loads feel?

For softer loads, I've gone to 7/8 and 1 oz. loads. Pending on the wad I use, I sometimes have to use a felt wad to fill up the shell. but it works. I use half of a 20ga felt wad under the shot for a 7/8oz load when using an 1 1/8 wad. Very soft shooting and I have shot 25/25 a number of time, +20 always.
