some mag extenders adversely effect the reliability of the magazine and, thus, actually increase the need to carry a spare mag.

I carry a spare when I carry the single stack 9mm, 14 rounds total between a spare and whats in the mag/pipe. When I carry the double stack .45, I don't carry a spare.

Double-stack I carry one spare, single-stack I carry two spare.

I've heard some people who know way more than me say that if you need that much ammo then what you really need is more practice. Well, if somebody (or more than one person) is trying to kill me, I plan on taking every safe shot offered to me until the threat subsides. There is no rule that says I won't get killed as long as I'm waiting for the perfect torso placement.

I have reasons to believe, that even if I go against multiple armed attackers, then 15 rounds will be sufficient to either take some of the bad guys down and gain access to their guns'n ammo or... to get killed. Either way you won't need spare mags.

Sometimes, though, paranoia hits really badly (like right after those terrorist attacks in Mumbai) so I pack an extra mag + BUG with extra mag. But usually no spares, just one full mag of 10/15 (depending on gun), empty chamber. However, I don't have 1911 yet. I imagine that I will carry spare mag with it, since 7 round mag is kinda pushing it...

I generally put one mag or two speed strips, depending on my gun of choice that day, in my off side front pant pocket.
