Remington 870
Can I use slugs out of my 870 with a modified choke tube in it? I was given a box of sluggers and was thinking of maybe picking up deer hunting with it.

As far as I know, you shouldn't be using any choke with any barrel constrictions for slugs, so a cylinder choke would be the only recommended choke.
Please, someone chime in if I'm wrong!

I have a Benelli, I was told when buying that only slugs with Cylinder choke. Even though your on a 870, i would avoid slugs with modified.
THINK ABOUT IT TWICE, Cause you're slow with your hands

Re: Remington 870
The use of a modified choke and Rem Sluggers is not a problem. I've actually shot foster style slugs through full chokes before. The design of forster slug (solid head, hollow base with the "rifling" molded into the outside) allows the slug to deform to the diameter of the muzzle. The lead is actually soft enough to not deform the barrel. Going back to the design the "rifling" on the forster style slugs is not to make the slug spin but to give when the slug encounters a tight choke. Now in reference to full bore slugs like the buckhammer and slugs designed for rifled barrels I wouldn't recommend using them with tight chokes. I can't recall ever shooting one out of a choke tighter than IC. I may have used them with the MOD but I can't recall and probably wouldn't in the future. As long as your slugs are forster slugs also known as rifled slugs, pumpkin balls and others that I'm not aware of you will be fine shooting them out of your modified choked shotgun.
It's all fun and games, til someone shoots your bobber!

Re: Remington 870
I lucked out today. I was out at the local Dick's to pick up 5.56 since its on clearance and they had an 870 rifled slug cantelever barrel there. It was a return that was fired 3 times so I got it for $100. Now I jsut need to put on a scope and I'm set I would think. I can even probably switch out to the copper sabot rounds now right?

Re: Remington 870
Yeah, there are rounds specifically for rifled SG barrels.
On another note, I have read your threads about buying a shotgun, excellent choice (but so is a Mossy). If your mod choke barrel has removable chokes, you can get others that screw in place of the current unit. With those, and your slug barrel you now own a weapon capable of hunting nearly every type of game in PA.
Be careful shooting clay birds, they can be addicting...
