Default Gas ports for a 870 pump?

I recently bought a used 870 Wingmaster. While I was cleaning the 870, I noticed alot of carbon build up inside the magazine cap and on the top side (muzzle end) of the magazine tube. I cleaned everything up on the receiver.

Then I started the barrel. I noticed it had 2 holes inside the retaining ring (not sure what its called) on the barrel that secures the barrel to the magazine tube. The buildup on carbon appears to be from these gas ports.

What is the purpose? Is this normal?

Not sure of which shotgun you really have there. A 870 Wingmaster is a pump and doesn't have gas ports (like a semi would). I'm guessing you have a Remington 1100 or 1187 (the 2 most popular Remington semi-auto shotguns) Please check to see what model you have and report back.

To your question: It's normal. Some of the gas from the firing of a round is "ported" to the action to auto-load the next round.

There was a sort of fad for ported shotgun barrels, but you are talking about internal gas ports- it would have to be some sort of auto - makes no sense on a pump.

It is most definitely a 870 Wingmaster. Remember, I did disassemble and clean it already.

I am not that much of a newbie.

I know the barrel guide ring is cracked. I think it may have been from the 2 gas ports.

There are 2 ports that reach into the barrel from inside that ring.

I looked down the bore and can see the 2 gas ports as well as sticking a rod into the holes to see if they went through.

what is the barrel marked? looks like you have an 1100/11-87 barrel on an 870.

I agree with this hypothesis! ^ I didn't think they were interchangeable.

i know some 1100 barrels would interchange with the 870 wingmansters years ago.

I have been in the market for a 1100 and ahve watched many disassembly videos of the 1100 and the barrel guide rings do not look like the guide ring on the barrel I have.

My guide ring looks just like a normal 870 guide ring.

Sounds like you have an 878 barrel (which was a semi-auto) on an 870. My quick google search shows that an 870 barrel can be used on an 878 (but no gas ports means it will not cycle), so maybe an 878 barrel can be used on an 870 (and blow gas where it shouldn't). That's my guess.
