Game commission should be structured to manage wildlife
DAVID KVERAGAS
Newton Township
In a recent press release by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (#059-10) concerning junior pheasant hunts Executive Director Carl G. Roe is quoted as saying;
"The goal is to successfully compete with all the other activities and recreational opportunities that vie for a young person's time. It's truly a challenge for the Game Commission, as well as Pennsylvania's one million hunters."
It is not the duty of the PGC to compete with other youth-based recreational programs and activities. The purpose of the Pennsylvania Game Commission is to oversee and manage the wildlife for the benefit of all Pennsylvanians.
There are not one million hunters in Pennsylvania. According to the PGC annual report (available at the agency website or in the January edition of Game News magazine) there were only 795,000 Pennsylvanians licensed to hunt in the previous year. Add in the 57,000 licensed non-residents and the figure is still far short of the million mark.
Pheasants are no more native to North America than starlings and rats. Hence they have a difficult time surviving here and requiring the annual stocking programs. Considering these birds are neither native nor wild the PGC should have nothing to do with them. Nor should the agency continue wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars releasing birds that will succumb to starvation, exposure or predation within weeks if not days.
It is time for the PGC to be restructured with hunting and hunters restrained and true wildlife management becoming the top priority.
I responded back. This damn forum is getting to me.

Mr. Kveragas, I believe you should know what the Pa. Game Commission is before you suggest it be restructured. The key word is "game." Game is any animal hunted for food or not normally domesticated. Game animals are also hunted for sport.
Hunters pay for the Pa. Game Commission through hunting licenses. So your suggestion that hunting and hunters be restrained, would be very bad for the Game Commission.
What you are suggesting is a whole new organization that would need funded through tax dollars. Good luck getting that passed. We need higher taxes?Last edited by B2Luv2Hunt; June 24th, 2010 at 07:28 AM.

Re: Hunters and hunting restrained and my reponse to that.
He is right about one thing. The PAGGC fails utterly at wildlife management. Good reply man.

Re: Hunters and hunting restrained and my reponse to that.
Why does the PGC fail at wildlife management? I have heard this from some people?
I had not issue hunting on private property... never hunted state game land.
You do not want a restructured org filled with anti hunters.
What about the PGC is a failure?
The ones calling it a failure, are they hunters?

The money used comes from licenses.Last edited by thefirstndsecond; June 24th, 2010 at 06:50 AM.

I have heard different people say the PAGC has become a bunch of tree huggers.... what about them has changed?
Do they do a good job of managing the conservation of wildlife?
I know two or 3 years ago we had a huge issue with sickness and something like blue tongue.
It killed many deer in NJ and Eastern PA.
I know some areas have point restrictions etc..
Is the argument the age old argument of antler restrictions versus meat?

Coyotes and mountain lions. Enough said...
Overall, I think they do a decent job. Nobody ever said it was easy. But IMO, there have been a lot of failures in recent years. Besides the above ^, having the two seasons together killed the populations...
Just a few things here and there. I think they are trying to progress recently though, which is good. Hopefully they can get things on the right track...III%

Re: Hunters and hunting restrained and my reponse to that.
The "commission" was taken over by Ins. Co. lobbyists.....
That is why the Doe population got decimated....
And now we have a decimated herd, so , now they are trying to bring it back, so that they can sell more Licenses, to get the funds they lost, when the herd got wiped out........
We just need to get the antler restrictions reversed now........
