Default 1960 Polish milled AK, anyone have experience with these?

Hi, I've heard milled recievers are the better AKs though I don't know if it makes alot of difference. Anyone have one of these and what are your opinions on them. Classic Arms and Surplus City have them for $699. They look really nice. What do you think?

I have no direct experience with those AKs, but I've heard the same things you have. I also heard that milled AKs are overkill, which is why the Russians went back to stamped recievers...they knew this. There are some INCREDIBLY well built AK's with stamped recievers out there for less, but if you have the cash to burn, I imagine the Polish AK is a sound investment.

Search this subforum, IIRC, BillT had a couple and spoke of them.

Edit: Being part Polski, I was initially warmed to the idea and thought I could rationalize yet another stray AK to feed - but; I could find no one that had one that could coroborate whether or not it has similar Polish arsenal markings as does my stamped Polski U/Folder. That plus the wood appears to be parts-pile furniture.

Given that I currently have more AKs than brain cells, I could find no justification to get one, although a milled AK would be different than what I already have. If for nothing else but the milled recvr, if you have the ducats for another AK, I say get one.

    Aren't milled AK's... Uh... NOT $699?

So if these are... Why are they?

    Has to be a reason.

Actually I believe the Russians switch to stamped receivers because they were cheaper and faster to produce.

Milled receivers could be considered more robust than stamped, better is a tough term to use. In full auto the milled would beat stamped, but we are talking about semi auto. Believe me, I have nothing against milled AKs ... I might even own a few

From what I hear, they are actually pretty nice guns but I haven't handled one so I can't verify. If you clean up the wood they actually look really nice too.

I've messed with the ones at Surplus City a few times... nice guns, considered buying one but the price keeps me away. With Yugos priced $200 lower and WASRs priced almost $400 lower I just can't justify spending $650+ on this AK...
Just because 'perfect' is impossible does not mean we should settle for 'broken'.

    Reader's digest condensed version:

The first prototype AK receivers were stamped, since they were designed for mass production from the inception. They had teething troubles with the very first variants, I don't recall exactly what. Possibly something with the rivets loosening.

The milled version was intended to factor out the receiver issues so they could move on with testing. The gun worked as expected and went into full production, the "first" models were really the second variant.

The milled receivers worked fine but were more time consuming & expensive to make, they went back to the stamped receiver as soon as they ironed out the bugs. The stamped receiver known as the "AKM" we see today is actually the third variant.
