New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
Ok, just bought Mossy 500 Tactical 12ga. Wow. Very cool.
This is my first shotgun and I'm very happy with purchase. But, the think just about rips my shoulder off. Yes, call me names. But the son-of-a-gun hurts with 00buck coming out the other end.
It has the ATI 6-pos stock on it - has anyone put an aftermarket pad on the aftermarket stock? I'd like to get the pain down into the 4-5 range if possible!

I am with you you on this. I got a Mossberg 500 JIC a few months back and the last and first time I shot it I swear it burst a blood vessel in my arm. My entire arm was sore the next day or two. I had the stock up tight against my armpit like you are supposed to.

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
Are you kidding me?
00 buck shot and complaining about the kick...
if you bought a semi auto kick is less.
Dude, practice and you will not feel a thing.
Sometimes I wonder if people get used to shooting small caliber rifles and can't handle 12ga shotguns?
try a 12ga 3.5 in semi auto.. turkey loads...

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
When I first got my mossy 500 12g, I bought all kinds of ammo, birdshot, 4 buck, 00 buck, and 3" 000 buck. I can't use 3.5", barrel isn't made for them. Bird is cake, buck is nice, the 000 buck is in a league of its own, haha. It's still way managable, but I know I wouldn't be spending too much time shootin that lol.

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
I agree . . . If you have a proper shotgun stance then you won't have any problems with the 12 gauge. Personally, I weigh 150 pounds so I'm not a big guy at all but I handle the 12 gauge recoil very well because I bury the stock in my shoulder and I lean into the shot. I shot about 50 low brass target shells and some slugs last weekend and I didn't have any problems. What I try to make people realize when they fire my shotguns is that you're really only going to make it worse by being afraid of the recoil.
The ATI stock is crap by the way. Replace it with a Blackhawk Spec Ops stock if you want something that will reduce the recoil.

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
I never really had a problem with my 500 or 590. Yeah they kick, but not bad.
I cant speak to the ATI stock, and a rubber pad, I know they are available for the AR-15 stocks, If it fits, it would probably help to some degree.
I replaced my original parts with a Hogue - Stock & forend, I have the Tamer pistol grip also. The Hogue parts are top notch.
I can shoot this thing one handed with the Hogue pistol grip.Last edited by Paintwerk; June 23rd, 2010 at 03:36 PM.

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
I am not going to get into bird shot vs buck shot discussion.
Bird shot is not great for defensive ammo, especially if they are dressed in winter clothes.
Pattern your gun just to see center shot. Use some type of buck shot.
As with any firearm in the home, you have to be aware of your surroundings, who is in the next room or apt. and how far your bullet or shot will travel.

Re: New Mossy 500 - OUCH!
Thanks, guys. I've got some research to do.
I've heard 00 buck is the way to go for HD, so I'm surprised to read different here. I'll do some more thinking about that too. My longest shot in a HD situation is likely under 25 ft, and I live in a house.
