Default Glock 35: What is this? (see photo)

In addition to enjoying every aspect of pistol ownership, I also actually enjoy that fact that there's no end to the learning process. So, though I ask red-faced for not knowing, I know I'll pick up a new bit of information.

What is this hole, and why does it exist on the Glock 35, and not, for example on my Glock 19? Thanks!

I always thought it was part of the slide lightening process, much like the top cutout on the slide unless using a compensated barrel. They likely had to remove enough mass from the slide to make it function properly with the standard recoil spring, that bottom hole just being part of the process.

Interesting! Thanks! So, no actual functional purpose, other than reducing weight/mass. Nice.

That opening can be used when installing a new front sight that has the 3/16" hex head screw. The opening is just right for the nutdriver.

    This^^^^^

It's so you can change out the sights. It's a competition gun and people like to do that.
