    Default ak decisions

I will be getting either an romanian akm wasr or a siagia 223 16 inch barrel

Which is better for plinking and if shtf which im not a great follower but just in case

my thoughts are both are ak47's but the romanians have a bad name but the siage is set up like a hunting styled rifle but is scoped

Keep in mind this isn't my only semi auto type rifle

    any thoughts????

My vote would be for a SAIGA - they come from the same factory that the original AKs come from.

The one thing you have to be really careful of with some of the Saiga models, is many of them will not accept standard 30 round WASR Hi-Cap magazines. This is a big problem because the Saiga magazines are hard to find, and are very pricey when you do.

I would say based on that fact go with a WASR Romanian. Of those go with a GP-1975 Model. The reason is they are put together a little nicer, with better attention payed to fit and finish. They usually don't come equipped with slings, oilers, bayonets, and extra goodies, but those are cheap and plentiful on the aftermarket.

For around $80.00 more you can step up to a Yugo. They utilize thicker steel in the receiver, and are noticeably heavier, even in the underfolder models, and exhibit even a higher quality of fit and finish. But if all you're looking for is a cheap AK-47 that will go bang when you need it, any WASR model AK-47 will serve you well. Bill T.

im leaning towards the wasr honestly because of the mags and price

but more I research it doesnt seem like either would be a bad choice

Just be sure to check the gun you buy for front sight cant. It's common with AK's in general, and even more so with the WASR 10 Romanian models. Bill T.

It take all but 20 min to make the saiga accept normal AK mags. All you have to do is install a bullet guide, and file down the mag release

These are all great tips except for the fact that a WASR is more expensive than a factory SAIGA! The quality is unmatched. WASR's are most often Century imports which are sold as new but they sure aren't. They have mis-matched parts and some of them could even present a dangerous situation.
Now to the SAIGA (one of which I own). It is a simple job to "convert" a saiga. I'm preparing to do it and I've never done any metal working at all! There is no reason to settle for a WASR when you can have yourself a real Russian AK variant. If I were shopping around again, I would definitely go with the SAIGA-it's a fine firearm.
PS: heck, keep track of me, i may post pics of my converted saiga someday!

If true blue Russian turns you on in an AK-47, you can simply buy one of the Arsenal Models. They are heavily attached to the Saiga brand, and very well put together. The downside is cost. The better models start around $700.00. Bill T.

i just wanted to say that ill be picking up a 1985 Rommy AK tomorrow. i gave it a good look over and its in pretty good condition tho it has had a good amount of use. on the plus side is the wood is in better condition than the 1975 and 1980 model they had.
