    Exclamation Serial Killer in Emporium

Man charged in shooting deaths of Jefferson County couple

State police have charged a Cameron County man in the deaths of a Jefferson County couple, and are investigating him in two additional unsolved homicides.

Steve Patrick Rebert, 45, of Emporium, has been charged in the deaths of James Wayne Shugar and Victoria Lynn Shugar, state police said. Both were shot multiple times and were found in the basement of their Snyder Township home April 12.

During a search of Mr. Rebert's home, state police found evidence that potentially related to crimes in New York. They forwarded information to the New York state police, the Genesee County sheriff's office and the Orleans County sheriff's office "that related to two unsolved homicides dating back to 2005 and 2007," according to a state police release.

New York investigators said Mr. Rebert is a suspect in the November 2005 shooting death of 46-year-old Bill Fickel of Oakfield. Police in neighboring Orleans County say Mr. Rebert is also a suspect in the February 2007 shooting death of 47-year-old Kevin Smith of Shelby.

Mr. Rebert was an Oakfield resident who knew Mr. Fickel and and Mr. Smith and lived within a mile of each man. All three attended Clarence High School in suburban Buffalo.
According to the definition wouldn't this mean he is a serial killer if he did commit all of these murders? Anyone have any more information on this story?

Presuming the same suspect is guilty of the murders in New York state, then he at least satisfies the "more than three victims" and "30 day cooling period" criteria to meet the definition of a serial killer.

The article doesn't really give enough information to guess what his motives were. The definition given in the Wikipedia article requires some sort of psychological gratification in the act of killing.

If he killed these people for his own sick amusement, then he would qualify as a serial killer. On the other hand if he had some sort of connection to the victims and this was some sort of personal vendetta, the usual definition doesn't apply. It could also be that he was a home invader motivated by material gain, but just happens to be ruthless and murders anyone who gets in his way.

It's pretty damn terrifying either way, regardless of whether or not it meets some particular definition of serial killer.

    From the article:

Didn't hear about the school thing. His victims in PA had no relation to him other than he went to their flower shop.

If they had no strong relation then I say it sounds like a serial killer.

This kind of thing really weirds me out. How can someone do such things?

Typically it's a sever mental problem.

A "normal" (for lack of a better work... Who the heck is normal?) person wouldn't do that. Even a person with a very bad temper/violent streak will not go on a killing spree, normally (there's that word again). Not necessarily because this person doesn't want to kill. Maybe it's because they know they will get in trouble if they do it. There are many different theories, depending on what area of psychology you get the answer from.
Freud would say it was because of an underdeveloped superego. Skinner would say that the killer was "taught" to do it, or maybe just not taught not to do it.

That's a start, but basically, it's because they are EFFED in the head.

Simple solution to all dirtbags. Get competent, professional firearms training. This requires a serious investment in time, capital, and disciplined learning. Far more than most civilians believe is necessary. Criminals succeed because most Americans have become soft, fat, lazy, and immoral. Look around at modern American society. We either take our country back, or we watch it's certain destruction. Choose....or the enemy chooses for you.

Seamus, could you please describe your thought process when you chose this old thread for your first post? Why this one? Why now?
