Re: WI: OCer robbed, disarmed at gunpoint
IMO there has been a fair amount of criticism leveled at the victim's lack of SA that I think is unjustified. Neither in this thread, nor the one at Wisconsin OC, is there any indication the victim was "surprised" by the approach or presence of the robber.
As Pennsy pointed out, a firearm is not a talisman; I would add that neither is SA.
We are free to choose to respond to any stranger approaching us, for any reason, by keeping our distance and replying with an "I can't help you".
However, and IMHO, that is a form of bondage. Personally, and SA notwithstanding, I choose not to live my life that way. When the "threat signal" is obvious, then of course that is another matter. And perhaps that is where the victim failed.
One of the USMC's "unwritten rules of engagement" is "be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet". It is a crude but nonetheless poignant analogy of a "healthy" way of dealing with strangers.
As most of you know, I have been involved in formal training for 15 + years. I'm confident in my ability, I practice SA, and I hope to rise to the occasion if and when need be. OTOH, I refuse to live my life as if I were living in Beirut, Baghdad, or some crime ridden inner city.
There are many forms of slavery.

Re: WI: OCer robbed, disarmed at gunpoint
i don't usually like to quote entire posts, but this one is a gem.
great post tony.
it is actually a nice feeling to participate in society and help out your fellow man every now and then.
(and, judging from what some people post on the topic of situational awareness, i think they must live in a cave deep in the forest and never venture out of it...or, at least, they must never walk down a sidewalk.)F*S=k

Looking back over this thread, I am amazed to see how rapidly my sense of maturity on firearm ownership and self-defense has grown.

Re: WI: OCer robbed, disarmed at gunpoint
This was discussed by a bunch of us on another forum. I believe the consensus we came to was the "victim" was either fibbing, or was walking around in condition white, not paying attention to his surroundings, and basically was just inviting such an occurrence.
When anyone OC's, they should always be aware of their surroundings. To do otherwise is inviting trouble.

Re: WI: OCer robbed, disarmed at gunpoint
As previously mentioned, I was also taught to "be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet." because really, you never know what's going to happen and it's better to be safe than sorry. Especially in a life or death situation. Ia lways try to be alert and aware, especially when OC'ing. Some people are just completely oblivious.
Just today, I was OC'ing in a Wawa on my lunch break, and walked right past a uniformed cop who didn't even notice my sidearm.
