Default Re: Ruger 10/22 worth buying for SHTF and plinking

I have two 10/22's - one is near stock, and other is built up as target gun, and I imagin I'll buy more.
IMO, EVERY shooter should at least have one 10/22.

As SHTF gun, you most definatly should have one.
AR or AK are fine, but You dont want to use them for everything.
Basic 10/22 with good solid X4 scope and several brick of ammo will goes long way to hunt small game, and if needs to be, it can be used as defence gun.
Will it take down bad guy in one shot right away? Not unless you get the head shot. But multiple shots from 10/22 in bad guy's chest would certainly make him reconsider about continueing his action...

I got this attachment for 3 magazines. It works pretty good, and you don't have a long magazine sticking down out of your rifle. 30 Round Magazine, but you can lay on the ground and keep the rifle level in front of you. Can't do that with a longer magazine.

Be forewarned - use of CCI Stingers or Velocitors (most viable defensive rounds) may void whatever warranty is still available on the rifle.

While I am a fan of the 10/22, I chose to go with a Savage MKII instead for my 'cheap, fun to shoot and accurate' rifle.

Knowing how large the aftermarket is for 10/22s, and knowing how much of a sucker I am for cool upgrades, I chose to just go with the Savage that already had the laminated thumbhole stock, stainless heavy bull barrel and an adjustable trigger. I threw a cheap scope on it and a bipod and I'm happy as a clam.

All that said, it is a bolt action rifle and if you're looking for a semi I'd go with the 10/22. Everyone should own a .22 for practice/plinking. I read somewhere that many snipers train with .22s at 100yds because it is the same trajectory as a .308 at 1000yds.

No one I know wants shot with it, but I have yet to hear any sound reason based in reality that indicates a .22 would be a good option. I would venture to guess that a shot or two to the face will improve your odds, but still.

I do not know the effective distance, but I am comfortable out to 100 yards, anything more I think is reeaaaly pushing it to be reliable.

IMHO you can't ever go wrong by having a 10/22 handy.

Here's mine. I really need to shoot some new pics.

in a self defense situation its better than a rock or a stick.. and even with the stock trigger you can crank off a 25 round mag ver quickly...

its good for small game... that way your alway fed.... mine has a folding ATI stock on it so its fairly easy to store.. with an aftermarket stock, bipod, mags, and a scope i think i invested like 300 all together... rifle included.... id like to buy a new barrel down the line and those go anywhere between just over 100 to a few hundred dollars...

and since i use federal bulk packs its like 15 for 500 rnds.... so you spend 100$ for 3k rounds.... that should keep you fed for a while...

im my opinion.... i would fold the stock and sling it over the shoulder.... and use it for food....

however id like something a little more powerful for any human contact..

If only you could eat all the empty brass!

I still remember the Hunter's Safety course I took at age 14. The Instructor said that a .22LR is capable of penetrating 1" plywood @ 25yds.... 1/2" ply @ 100yds.... or that a miss can travel up to a mile and a half before falling from flight.

I played with a 10/22 years ago, too. I felled wave after wave of mass Coke can assaults. A fun trick was to put 2-liter soda bottles full of water in a straight line and see how many the bullet would get through. Sometimes it would stop inside one and you'de get a spent bullet in mint-condition!

Reading this thread makes me itch for one again. Maybe I'll have one, too!

I got yet another one yeasterday.
Older(2005) SS model - Not like current bead blasted poo looking one with plasti trigger, but polished stainless barrel with metal trigger. came with older weaver stainless scope

    So I now have 3 - 10/22.

Donno what I want to do with this one yet. i think I'm gonna keep this one the way it is, but then maybe some trigger work
