Your .30-30 experiance
Because I have only killed a few deer with a .30-30 I would like to hear about how well it performed for you, please don't tell about gut shots or neck/spine shots as they tell little about the killing power. Tell about solid chest hits only. Tell good and bad perofomance.
The more responses I get the more accurate of a conclusion can be drawn.Last edited by Montell C. Williams; October 9th, 2007 at 08:19 AM.

Re: Your .30-30 experiance
My cousin shot one right behind the shoulder where you should hit one....Ran about 30 yards and dropped. The shot was at about 50 yards.
Blew the lungs right out the other side of the deer and it died quickly. Using 180 Gr bullets...

Re: Your .30-30 experiance
I have killed two deer with my 30-30.
Both solid chest (hear/lung) between 50 and 80 yds.
Neither deer ran more than 50 yards before going down....dead.
The bullets I used were Winchester Power Points I think. (I'm not real sure but if you really need to know I can look when I get home. I bought a couple boxes of them when they were on sale at KMart a couple of years ago and haven't shot a box of them yet.)

Re: Your .30-30 experiance
My 14 year old shot a deer at about 35yds with my handloaded 170gr Speer bullets out of a Marlin 336C.
One shot broadside just behind the shoulder, deer went less than 10yds. He was traveling uphill with a doe north of Tionesta and just past Endeavor.
That was the only deer that gun has taken.

Re: Your .30-30 experiance
I've shot at least a couple dozen deer with my 30-30. Max yardage was about 120yds. deer ran about 50. Worse shot was a gut shot at about 45 yds and it dropped about 200 yds. If you hunt at 100yds or less a 30-30 is beautiful. The Hornady lever revolution is 225 yd easy. The furthest deer that I shot with the Hornady was the afore mentioned 120 yd shot. I have no plans on giving up my 30-30 unless I become incapable of walking and need to hunt the pipelines.

130 yds my first deer. Lung shot, but it dropped where it stood and was dead by the time we walked to it. Im not sure but I think I was using remington core-lokt.

Re: Your .30-30 experiance
I filled up mom's and two of my friends' parents freezers with wild hog/boar in Florida countless times in my teenage years with a 30-30. I cant even begin to count the number of those porkchops-on-the-hoof that I've killed.
Taken a deer or two as well with the old cartridge.
Most of the pigs were killed with 1-2 shots. I did have a big male that managed to charge through all 7 rounds to the head and shoulders, only stopping to my best friend's 20ga slug from a broadside hit about 10ft in front of me. (needed clean underwear after that - lol)
The deer all fell dead within 50yrds of the hit.
All I ever used was 150gr softpoints. I'm thinking Winchester brand ammo.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515
