USPSA and SW XDM Question
Question regarding USPSA Open Class and which would be better. I currently own an XDM .40, the thing just fits my hand perfect, likewise for the XDM .9 and I'm going to assume the XDM .45 will be the same. I'm considering taking one of the above and modifying it to compete in the USPSA Open Class. Many folks are saying you've got to use a .38 super, but honestly, why? The XDM is a great gun, it fits perfect, is there any reason, why I shouldn't consider going with the XDM? Also, which would be the better caliber to compete with in the Open Class, .40, .9 or .45?

Re: USPSA and SW XDM Question
You could go 9mm major with the XDm......but your not going to get 29 rounds in the mag like a 2011 gun. The trigger likely isn't going to be as light either.
You'll also need a comp and optic.
Other than that, you CAN go this way.....it's just not very common.

Re: USPSA and SW XDM Question
One of the local shooters in the Pittsburgh area is trying to run an XDm Open Gun. He is shearing off the barrel lug with major loads. Two of them so far this year. I think I would look at another platform to build an open gun on.

Re: USPSA and SW XDM Question
The XDM is not a good platform for an open gun.
Reasons:
.45ACP - Small mag capacity compared to .38 super and 9mm major
.40 S&W - Small mag capacity compared to .38 super and 9mm major
9mm - The gun isn't built to handle the abuse of 9mm major loads
Besides that, .45ACP and .40 don't shoot anywhere near as well as 9mm major and .38 super with a compensator.
If you want the cheapest route to an open gun, a Glock 17 with a threaded KKM barrel, S&J Custom compensator, and S&J Custom C-More mount is the way to go. You'll also want/need a magwell (Dawson ICE is very nice), a good trigger, (Vanek Custom), and big mag extensions (Taylor Freelance).
You'll quickly realize that even the "cheap" open gun option isn't cheap. But it's way less than an open gun on a 2011 platform.
And let me ask you this - do you load your own ammo? If not, don't even think about shooting open.
Just my $.02

Re: USPSA and SW XDM Question
Check out http://springerprecision.com/ scott has done a few xd/xdm for open division and has a xdm 9 major, or rich at canyon creek http://www.canyoncreekcustom.com/ Also springfield has also made a xmd9 for open but it costs $3500, so that is out of the question.
Here are some items that you can use to build one:
Magwell: http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=00PG020
170mm mag extention: http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=00PG021
threaded barrel for comp: http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=00PG056 (although springer does have a barsto barrel too)
Compensator: http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=05SSH
Carver c-more mount: http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=XD-COMP
or if you want a slide mounted RD leupold has their deltapoint that has a xdm mount.
Scott from springer precision or rich from canyon creek do great trigger jobs on the xd/xdm. I say go for it, no point in letting glocks have all the fun. You can shoot minor in open division so if you don't load you can use factory ammo, but hits on anything but A's will be lower than major. Good Luck.
