Thumbs up My 5 year old daughter had me pretty impressed tonight!

I was cleaning my 1911 and my daughter as always likes to sit with me as I clean it.

Tonight I showed her where the safety was, how the hammer and striking pin worked, how to tell if the safety was on or off and proper muzzle control. In addition I showed her all the different parts (trigger, hammer, safety, grip, slide, slide stop, muzzle, etc...). I also showed her how the bullet works, how it feeds into the barrel and how the striking pin hits the primer and sets it off. I quizzed her afterwards and she did pretty darn good. I think a few more drills and I'll be ready to take her to the range.

    I can't wait!

Having a kid watch someone cleaning a gun is a great way to teach them about the gun and it's parts. That is how I learned. But I think my dad and Grandfather just wanted me to clean the guns after I shot them.

That's a great thing about girls: attention span. My 5YO boy can't make it past "safety" before the eyes gloss over and he's off to the next activity.

My 3 year old son can't sit still for more then two seconds... so I feel ya. My daughter on the other hand will sit there with me for 30 minutes while I teach her something.

When my buddy johnny was learning bout guns when he was 9, I started with air rifles and safety. He started to get edgy, I stopped and said"This is the most important part of shooting, if your not going to pay attention and learn this we won't go to the range until you do, one mistake or careless act can kill somebody" He sharpened up, and learned pretty quick. This summer we'll start on .22 and trap if his grades improve.

I have a 5 yo daughter who loves to help me clean my guns. We started when she was three. She's had two rules about guns drilled into her head the whole time, and she can recite them. If you find a gun, never touch it, and you tell an adult. I left my rifle on the table once for a minute and she made sure she told me. The only time I got worried was when I turned my back while cleaning and she put an empty casing into my 03a3 perfectly into the chamber. That was when she was still three. I think this year I am going to buy her a pellet gun to get her started. We're moving to the country and she'll have plenty of space.

What a coincidence. I stopped at Wally World today and they had Daisy Buck BB guns on clearance for $13! It's not pink, but I told my daughter that her next one will be pink. She"s pretty excited, but I think I'm more excited.
