Default How bad is this hole ?

I was cleaning my Marlin 25MN .22WMR rifle a little while ago, and noticed this hole on the bolt.

There is a similar hole on the other side of that center ridge.

Is this a "When you get a chance, replace it" kind of problem, or a "Don't even look at the gun till its fixed" sort of problem ?

I think it looks like it was made that way.

If it is like that on both sides, I would be inclined to believe that when they machined that part, two different cuts intersected each other and opened up the hole you see. My opinion is that they did that on purpose, but I am not a gunsmith and I think your first step (If you are worried about it) would be to see if a gun shop will let you take a look at a similar new gun. Or try to find pictures on the internet.

I'm not a gunsmith, but I do work in a machine shop. That was cut that way. There are no visible cracks or defects that I can see from this picture.

Also, IMO, that looks like the back side of the bolt head and the grooves intersected with the counterbore for the firing pin spring. Looks like you have at least 3/4" of metal between the bolt face and the hole.

I wouldn't sweat it, but if you are really concerned, take it to a gunsmith.

Look at the parts break down in the owners manual, you will see what goes there.......

It looks to me like there is a spring inside that hole.

I'm pretty sure that's a roll pin in there and is made that way for disassembly.

I don't know anything at all about it, but there is a thread on RFC about Savage rimfire bolts with a similar issue: MKII Damaged Bolt
