NJ has gun registration, and if you move into NJ from another state or coming out of the military, and the like, they expect you to register all of your weapons with the state police, through your local PD. Voluntary is the biggest lie on the form, it is mandatory, or they can charge you if they find out you have them. It is ridiculous,

Not true. It is a voluntary registration.

Check the law again. The firearms must meet NJ restrictions though.

Long guns are only kept on file with the FFL's

Hand gun purchases the state police are involved with paper trail.

If you would like contacts to explain the law to you about NJ I can provide them.

There is however misguidance and lying by police departments in NJ.
That say you have to register your guns.

This for example is a way they try and force you to register. THE REGISTRATION OF FIREARMS IN NJ IS VOLUNTARY. THIS WEBSITE SHOWS LIES AND MYSELF AND THE NRA STATE LOBBYIST HAVE CALLED THEM MANY TIMES. THE ANSWER WE GET IS, THE WEB ADMIN IS ON VACATION AND IT WILL BE CHANGED WHEN HE GETS BACK.

You see they can lie to the average uninformed NJ resident.

I can't keep informing people about NJ. Please check the NJSP website and join - http://www.newjerseyhunter.com/ They will school you just like PAFOA does for PA.

My handle on there is lungbuster.

bloodtrails is a great person to ask about NJ gun laws.

Wow. Even when you come out of the military, in NJ, they tell you clearly that if you are going to stay, you have to register your weapons.

Thanks for the clarity, because even the state police website talks about the registration as being mandatory.

I found out when my father believed the same thing you did. He tried to go down to the local PD and register his guns.

They knew him he work in my town for 41 years.

They had no clue what he was talking about. They laughed at him and said who told you that. They sent him back home.

There is a list of guns that are not NJ legal. You would have to make sure you gun is not on that list.

I am not a lawyer so my out is things do change.

I belong to the NJSFSC, Delaware Valley Friends of the NRA, and my gun club/hunting club in NJ.

You would need to look things up for yourself but the state police are the wrong direction. NJ laws are so confusing local law enforcement has no clue. Consult with Evan Nappen's office http://www.evannappen.com/

NJ is a state compared to a commonwealth. Their law and court structure is very different from PA.

Go to a firearm lawyer for a consult if you move to NJ. Learn the law, learn the hunting regs because PEOPLE GET THEM CONFUSED ALL THE TIME.

Example, baring any discharge local ordinance in NJ, you can build a range and shoot in your back yard. The 450' rule only applies to hunting not shooting.

The regs changed again when 1 gun a month changed. It was so screwed up FFL's could not purchase more than 1 hand gun from a manufacturer. They had to form another committee. No more just passing down firearms to your children, that got screwed up as well.

Bottom line, until NJ changes for the better, IT SUCKS!!!

Now are you starting to understand why some of us get a little heated when in discussions about Gov. and Law Enforcement?

I do understand, but I am just saying frustation should not lead to giving a bad cop a reason to be worse. That was all I was saying.

Wow- I have a home in Lower Township (North Cape May). Remind me never to ask them anything.

On a separate note, Evan Nappen is a guy I would certainly rely on to know his stuff.

I respect LEO's. I just understand that like me, some do not understand all laws all the time.

The New Jersey State Police is not authorized to provide legal advice to private parties.
This is their out regarding a phone call and advise from the NJSP about firearm laws.

    http://www.njsp.org/about/fire_ag2.html

Now again, I am not a lawyer so 1 gun a month may have changed more than I know.

At least call a gun lawyer before you move so you know and stay informed.

In NJ is has been customary to charge people first and then make then pay money to fight it in court.

Check newjersey hunter, call a lawyer, get informed.

Evan Nappen is THE GUY in NJ.. I am sure there are others, but I do not know them.
