I've family in Phila, and they seem to think they live in a wonderful place. And they are "unarmed, and proud of the fact".

Unarmed in Philly? thats against my religion

Don't want to sound callous but I don't need the newspaper to know there was a shooting in Overbrook, Hunting Park, Point Breeze, Nicetown, Southwest, etc. on any given night. That's why I don't hang out those places, especially at night.

    +1 !

It would make better news to NOT hear of a shooting on ANY given night in those areas LMAO !

I live in the Northeast Philly area and it's nice around me, shyt happens but nothing that bad, at least not very often. Matter of fact I don't remember the last time there was a shooting in my area...

So you are saying you dont have the diversity we have?
    +1 !

One of the biggest reasons why when the economy gets better I'll be looking to move a little further north, maybe around Bensalem or Lower Bucks not sure exactly....I know it's not much better but it is a LOT better then Philly and Philly is only getting worse each year.
When ALL else fails...the AK won't !! Emotions...??? emotions are for people who CARE !!!

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―Police are investigating a fatal shooting in South Philadelphia late Saturday night. Police are searching for a man who opened fire on a large crowd of people in the city's Mantua section after the July 4 fireworks, killing one teenager and injuring two others.Kyle Featherstone, 16, a junior at Simon Gratz High School, died shortly after 10 p.m. Monday from injuries to his head and chest.

Featherstone was walking home from the fireworks with friends shortly before midnight Sunday when the unidentified gunman fired into the crowd near 34th and Haverford Streets.

Police do not believe Featherstone, of the 3800 block of Olive Street, was the intended target of the shooting, Philadelphia Capt. James Clark said.

"We don't know who they were shooting at, but we don't believe it was" Featherstone, Clark said. "That's something we're still trying to figure out."

Two other males, 17 and 19, were injured. One of the teenagers was a friend of Featherstone's, but the other was merely walking nearby on the crowded sidewalk. Both have been treated and released.

Deadlier than usual Fourth of July
    By JAN RANSOM
    Philadelphia Daily News

Homicides and gun violence in Philadelphia spiked during the Fourth of July weekend, making it the deadliest Independence Day weekend in the city in five years, police statistics show.

The shooting death of Kyle Featherstone, a junior at Simon Gratz High School, was one of eight during the four-day holiday weekend, including five on Friday, July 2.

Featherstone, 16, was shot in the chest and head when a gunman fired into a crowd in Mantua returning from a fireworks display July 4 at the Art Museum. He died the following night.

"A young man was at a huge gathering that should have been a festive occasion. He gets shot," said Chad Lassiter, president of the Black Men at Penn School of Social Work, an organization at the University of Pennsylvania. "There's no specific trend, the larger issue is: How can we enact gun legislation and conflict-mediation?"

The number of gunshot victims this Fourth jumped from 18 last year to 31 this year, according to police stats.

"I think the holiday weekend proves that access to illegal guns and gun trafficking hasn't gone away," said Joe Grace, executive director of CeaseFire PA, an organization that works to prevent gun violence.

The July 4 holiday weekend in 2005 saw 38 gunshot victims including six homicides.

By contrast, no homicides were recorded during the Independence Day holiday weekend last year, and just one in 2008.

"You get spikes in violence periodically," said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey. "We do have a lot of violent people who are not afraid to use a handgun."

"We are awash with guns in this culture," Grace said. "When these flashes happen, it bears witness that we have a problem in this state."

The problem, Grace said, can be attributed to weak state gun laws.

"What about the rights of people to walk safely through the streets of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania?" Grace said. "I think that right is equally as important as the right to own a gun."

According to the Pennsylvania state gun law, people with handguns who enter the state are not required to register them.

In addition, a person must be at least 18 years old to possess a firearm unless the "minor is lawfully involved in hunting or trapping activities," or unless the minor is supervised by a parent or legal guardian and involved in lawful activity.

In Pennsylvania, a license to carry firearms is only required to conceal a firearm or to carry a firearm in a motor vehicle. But state law says that a license is required to carry a firearm in any manner on the streets or public property in Philadelphia.

Grace said he's pushing for the state to establish a law that would require people to report lost or stolen guns to the police.

Grace added that Philly police collect thousands of illegal guns yearly.

"Will it solve the problem?" Grace said. "No, but it is a step in the right direction."
    Oh, Mr. Grace....

I find it hilarious that the University of Pennsylvania has an organization of "Black Men at Penn School of Social Work". It is no wonder that Black Culture in America is in such sad disarray, and growing worse, they segregrate themselves! Between "black on black crime", the failure of the family unit and self segregation, many blacks will never see a civil society. Let all the race baiters spit and spew their stupidity about the black community being held down. Horseshit! They are keeping themselves down. It is truly pathetic

Be safe (and at least it is job security for my children).

Violence, fast and furious: 8 shot in city in just 2 hours
    By STEPHANIE FARR

Eight people were shot in the city in just two hours Saturday night and yesterday morning, including two children below the age of 10, police said.

One victim died - a 24-year-old who was among three men found shot inside a car when police pulled it over in West Kensington.

About 1:40 a.m. yesterday, cops responding to reports of a shooting on Lehigh Avenue near 2nd Street pulled over a gold Chevy Tahoe heavily damaged by gunfire, and found that three of the five men inside were wounded.

Police said that the car apparently was stopped at a traffic light on Lehigh when another car pulled up alongside and words were exchanged. Then, one or more people in the other car opened fire on the Tahoe, police said.

The victim, who was not identified, was shot several times and taken to Episcopal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m., according to police.

A 23-year-old passenger was shot in the left shoulder and was in critical but stable condition yesterday at Temple University Hospital, and another 23-year-old passenger who was shot in the right hand was treated at Temple and released.

Police yesterday had no suspects and no description of the other vehicle.

About 1:45 a.m., a 9-year-old girl and a 22-year-old woman sitting on the front porch of a Hunting Park house were hit by gunfire.

Police said that the two had "exchanged words" with a group of about five men who passed by the porch on Cayuga Street near 4th.

The men then walked about a block away before turning around and shooting at the victims, police said.

The 9-year-old, who was shot in the left leg, was taken first to Temple and then to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where she was listed yesterday in stable condition.

The 22-year-old, shot once in the right leg, was taken to Temple and also was listed as stable, police said.

The night's violence began about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, when a South Philadelphia party was marred by gunfire.

The party was under way in front of an apartment on Washington Avenue near 3rd Street, when an unidentified gunman, who was staked out about 500 feet away on 4th Street, indiscriminately opened fire on the crowd.

Police said that they found where the shooter had fired from - an unlit area with bushes and trash bins - because spent shell casings littered the ground.

It was unknown if the shooter hit the intended target, but a 3-year-old boy was hit in the lower left leg.

The child was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition yesterday.

Also taken to Jefferson later and listed in stable condition was a 30-year-old woman who was shot in her shoulder. A 34-year-old man who suffered a graze wound to his stomach was treated at the same hospital and released, police said.

A police source said that "bad blood" between residents of the two sides of Washington Avenue may be to blame.

Police have not made arrests in any of the cases.

Anyone with information about these crimes is urged to call the department's tip line at 215-686-TIPS.
