Default S&W 4566 Stainless Steel to Blue/Black Finish

I just bought a S&W 4566 that came in a stainless steel finish. I would actually like to get in refinished in black. Has anyone ever done this before? Would S&W do it for me? What are my other options? And finally, how much would I be looking at paying?

You can get it coated with something like DuraCoat or BlackT, that would be fairly cheap, probably be fairly cheap, around $100 or so. I'm not sure how well these finishes adhere to ss though. Check this link out...

I know it's possible to "blue" stainless but it turns out more black. It can look pretty good too. Perhaps ask S&W, they may be willing to do it for you.

You can go the nitride route like SIG Nitron or Glock's Tennifer process. I really like the Glock process, search Melonite for sources.

I'm not a big fan of sprayed on or painted on coatings. They don't age well IMO.

    edit:

I apologize I don't know the costs but I do know it isn't cheap. A good quality finish will take a pretty penny or two.

Stay away from Duracoat, it is junk and you get what you pay for.

For around 300 bucks you can get that fine auto over to Robar for some Roguard (matte or glossy) which is a great black finish. They will also NP3 your internals to make them smooth and corrosion resistant as well. I highly recommend Robar and they may even have a special going on right now.

If i get a finish put on the firearm, will it make it thicker? Will it still fit in the holster correctly?
