Re: Battle Packs - the Poor Man's Version
Apparently in the case of the German stuff it was a known problem with acidic cardboard and inks. Not something that was an immediate issue but over the years of sitting there, yes. In fact the recent lot of MEN that came into the country about 1.5 years ago that Sportsmans Guide had, had that issue with corrosion on the ammo, some severe.

Loose 5.56/.223 eventually punctures the bags.

Yeah, and more than that, I'd be concerned that bullets could become unseated/skewed by the pressure during the vacuum process.
I've tried it on the "moist" and "gentle" settings, but it still really squeezes stuff pretty good.
Perhaps a better version of the FoodSaver unit would allow for "softer" sealing.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Battle Packs - the Poor Man's Version
What about using some of the plastic boxes us reloaders use and vacuum sealing those? That would keep the ammo from coming in contact with the plastic vacuum bag.
