Cross Dominance = Poor Pistol Shooting

As the title suggests, I'm right handed but left eye dominant so I shoot my shotguns lefty BUT I still shoot my pistols right handed and I SUCK! I try repositioning my hands and I still can only hit what I'm aiming at about half of the time BUT I'm a great shot with rifles and shotguns. Short of using a laser sight or learning to shoot pistols left handed, can anyone suggest anything that might help me suck a bit less?

You didn't indicate what eye you use when shooting a handgun.

You should use your dominant (left) eye even though you shoot right-handed. Turn your head to the "right" (not down) so you can look at the pistol sights with your left eye. You may want to try this closing your right eye.

i have the same issue, but i wouldn't say i suck at handgun shooting...

Same here.. My left eye is dominant and I am right handed. At first it was difficult however with some practice I have no problems at all with it.

To the OP... Did you read the 2 eye vs. 1 eye thread?

I am right handed but my left eye is dominant. Here is what I do.

I use the modified Weaver stance, I'm turned slightly to the right, my feet are about shoulder width apart with the right foot toes are about even with the heel of my left foot. I then turn my head slightly to the right so that my chin is sort of touching my right shoulder and my left eye picks up the sights. When I started doing this I would either close my right eye or squint it. After a while I got to the point that I could shoot with both eyes open. Always remember to concentrate on the front sight. The front sight should be focused and the rear and the target may be a little out of focus.

And not to pat myself on the back but I have trophies and metals to prove it worked for me.

try shooting weaver, instead of isocolise <sp> and dont turn your head all the way. It worked for a friend of mine.

This. Couldn't have said it any better, works great for me,too. I don't have any trophies or medals but ive held my own.

I think you need to look somewhere else for the reason you shoot poorly. I'm right handed but lost my right eye 21 years ago. I learned to shoot shot guns, rifles and archery left handed. However I still shoot handguns right handed and have no problems. I also shoot them left handed for the same reason I shoot pool lefty on right rail shots. Sometimes you just can't make the shot right handed. I carry right handed and it is my best side.
