    Default Survival/End of world gun

My buddy and I were talking the other day about the best survival gun. We were talking about .223 v .308.

He has a really slick ar. I have always liked ar's but a have a thing for .308's.
Growing up my dad had a nice collection of Ar's but my favorite was his HK 91. The 91 is way out of my price. I found a few but they are going for $2500 plus and not in the best condition.

I have about 400 rounds of 223 and about 200 of 308 sitting around from my dad. I want a nice semi auto tactical in either caliber but can only get one for now.

I know there is an extreme difference between the the two. I have explored a lot of options in the 223 camp but am not sure where to look for the 308.

    What do you guys recommend?

AK-47. I have an AK and an SKS both in 7.62x39, so i have a couple thousand rounds laying around. But both of the guns are reliable and the AK at least would have fairly common replacement parts. But if you had to pick one of those platforms, I would go with the AR and .223

I'd choose a bolt action. Fewer parts to break and easier to maintain. I'd even consider a lever action.

I like the idea of the Taurus circuit Judge. I can take down large game with .45LC and take down small game with .410.

The same could be said with a simple 12 gauge pump action since you could use various size shot and slugs to take about any game out there.

It really depends on the situation though. Zombies? Roving gangs? Do you live near the mountains and lots of brush with a primary concern of just harvesting game to eat? It all brings different scenarios which highlights different firearms.

I guess it depends on what you feel the end of the world will be like.

If you think it will be a zombie/alien/chinese invasion the 5.56 would make the most sense to me as it will allow more ammo to be carried and quick follow up shots for multiple targets.

If you think it will be more wiped out population leaving you one of the last people on earth like The Stand or The Road then you might need more of a hunting round that works well for defense and take the .308.

Personally I have a few of each and if it ever evolves past a point where my shotgun and handgun cannot handle it then I will probably be zombified, abducted, or some other horrible ending as I stand in front of my gun safe still trying to decide.

There are plenty of tried and true 308 battle rifles out there (M1A/M14, AR10, FN FAL, SCAR, so on and so forth). I recommend looking into a PTR-91 if you want an H&K 91 for an affordable price. Yes, most will tell you to get an AK, but if an H&K 91 is what you are looking for, a PTR-91 does everything an AK does, but better.

I settled on the AR/5.56 platform for my survuval/eotwawki gun.

It is extremely versatile, has readily avabile parts/ammo, and gives a lot of bang for the pound. .308/7.62 has some clear advantages in specific situations. But if I am dealing with situations where a .308 would be that much better, I am confident my 5.56 will be a quality tool to assist me in getting a .308.

An AK that shoots .223 is the best bet for the end of the world because you can always use the ammo from the guys who ARs jammed up.

Unless I happen to have a lackey to carry some of my crap around, I'm looking at using the lightest firearm available to me.
